Prime Cattle (under 30 mos)
The January Primestock Show saw very good retail demand for handier weighted smart cattle and heavier cattle a shade easier than the pre-Christmas trade. The Champion was a 520kg Limousin cross heifer from F&B Smith of Masongill which sold to D&A Gregory & Sons of Bacup for the top price of 333.5p/kg or £1734. Reserve was a 560kg Limousin cross heifer sold by RT&J Crithcley & Sons of Hutton for 313.5/KG or £1756 to D&A Gregory & Sons. The same combination accounted for the best placed steers with the First prize male a 565kg Limousin cross from F&B Smith which made 317.5p/kg or £1794 when sold to Knavesmire Butchers and RT&J Critchley & Sons, second prize steer a notable 308.5p/kg or £1712 when sold to Robertshaws Farm Shop in Thornton.

3,281 Prime Sheep comprising 2564 Hoggs & 717 Cast Ewes & Rams

LAMBS – A mixed show today and although the average price per kilo and per head is exactly the same as last week, some types and weights were dearer, some cheaper. Nice types of handyweights were a decent enquiry and were short of buyers requirements with these selling to a good trade, a more commercial type of lambs would be a shade easier.
Smart heavies were good to sell, butchers types 280p to 300p, nice fed types around 270p, but a commercial ordinary lamb was a touch easier. Mule wethers were generally cheaper on the week, best end up towards 270p especially if weighing mid 40’s, but a heavy type and lighter weight type was less money on the week.
Some excellent top end prices, Paul Simpson of Bolton by Bowland leading the sale at £180 and £178 with two pens of Beltex both weighing 42kg (428p and 423p). Paul Baines of Gisburn made £173 per head and Ellis Bros Addingham Moorside were at £168 twice or 400p/kg. Several other pens or best buthcers types £150 to £166, or 350p to 390p.

EWES - Ewes up a gear with heaviest ewes all selling £140-£160 and pure Texels ewes from S Spyrou, Hebden Bridge selling to £201.50. JL North, Giggleswick sold to £179.50. Plenty of big ewes in with a bit of style £150-£175. Medium full meat ewes £125-£140 with ¾ meat ewes £110-£122. Lean ewes either side of £100. Medium lean ewes £88-£95 and plain ewes £70-£85. Suffolk ewes sold to £147.50.
Mules similar trade with big ewes £110-£119.50. Mediums £100-£108 and smalls £88-£95. Plain ewes £58-£70.
Swale ewes sold to £89.50 from Ashley & Rachel Caton, Otterburn. Plenty of meat abut £68-£80. Lean ewes £52-£60 and plain ewes £32-£40 with a few real plain goods making wither side of £15. Lonks sold to £96.50 and Cheviots sold to £129.50. Scotch ewes sold to £89.50 from RG Church, Askwith. Blue Faced Leicester ewes sold to £149.50
More Ewes required next week.

17 Dairy

Well our first sale of the New Year certainly didn't disappoint - buyers were out in force from the locality and further afield and they had a great selection of 17 forward - with fresh cows (6), fresh heifers (7) and in calf cows and heifers (4) on offer, but we need more numbers to meet demand as buyers still left empty trailered despite a flurry of bids and over half the lots forward making over £2000 today.
Robert Crisp, Calton again secured the Championship for the second successive sale, with this going to a 4 week calved 2nd calver by ABS Grazie, with the judge Shaun Sowray standing behind his convictions and taking this 30kg plus cow back to Bishop Thornton for £2320. However the top price was for another from Robert, a 2 week calved Silver daughter giving 25kg, who was Reserve Champion and first in the heifer in milk class - she headed home with Mark Goodall, Tong for £2380, with Robert again securing the days top average with his three averaging £2300, although Martin Petch of Aytonian Holsteins was not far behind with his pair of heifers both fresh in early December averaging £2225.
Ongoing dispersal stock were also credit to their sellers and commanded good trade to return customers - four fresh cows from J Dibb, Kilnsey saw a 2nd and 3rd calver respectively head home to John Howard, Carleton at £1980 and £1950, while Jack and Alan Wilson from Green Hammerton had a run of four in calf animals, topping at £2000 for a widely admired Picston Shottle warming with its third calf, in calf to sexed Adorable semen she also headed home with John Howard as did their top priced in calf heifer due in February to the Saler (£1900).
Next sale is Monday 24th and more entries are sought as well enquiries for whole or part herd dispersals - demand is there !
Averages - cows in milk £1805, heifers in milk £2132, in calf cows £1550, in calf heifers £1800.
