Prime Cattle (under 30 mos) Sales every Monday at 11:30am

Robert Pearson representing Ralph Pearson, wholesale butchers in Bradford were the leading buyers at the weekly sale accounting for all the leading prices including the leading gross overall at £2017 (294.5p/kg @ 685kg) a Limousin cross steer sold by Hargreaves Farms of Walton le Dale. The leading heifer was a 625kg Blonde cross at £1916 or 306.5p/kg from CD&RF Kitching of Threshfield selling to Pearsons whilst the same buyer proved just as strong on the handier weights with a 585kg British Blue heifer at 325.5p/kg (£1904) from R&E Cowperthwait, Settle and a 600kg Limousin cross steer from F&B Smith of Masongill at 324.5p/kg or £1947. Heavy premium quality cattle continue to sell extremely well at 288p+ and best retail cattle in the lower weights continue to make upwards of 300p/kg.

Cull Cow Prices Sales every Monday at 11:30am

The cast cows continue to be short on supply with just an odd meated heavy dairy in the entry which was 160p/kg. Lean and plain cows are a very good trade from 117.5p/kg to 138p/kg. Beef cows carrying flesh 170p/kg to 180p/kg.

N/S LAMBS
More about this week and plenty of customers to move them. Harry Walters of Penistone topped at £166 or 404p, other nice sorts of lambs £135 to £148 or 290p to 345p. Within todays entry was a large run of milk sheep (Lukerne) pures and crosses from CM&J Stott Chipping which sold to £142 or 289p.

 

O/S LAMBS
More sheep about today and the overall average up 5p on the week to sit at just shy of 264p/kg right through, including an SQQ of 280p/kg.
All classes would be dearer, with handy and lightweights an excellent trade, and heavies and overweights also better to sell. Mule, Hill and Horned lambs also took a nice lift on the week.

OVER 52kg
Like last week the overweights were good to sell. Top sale price in section was £175 or 311p for 55kg Beltex from JE Burrow, Hanlith. Peter Longdin of Tickhill topped his run at £164 today for 64kg Texels, with B&LN Dibb Otley making £154 of Charollais crosses.

46kg to 52kg
The heavy weight range was definitely better to sell this week, EP&JM Hutchinson made £165 of 50kg Continentals at 330p. the same vendor had others at £160 (47kg at 340p). RJ Bailes, Boroughbridge was another with a nice run of lambs seeing his best at £164 or 341p for 48kg.  

36kg to 45kg
The standard and medium weight lambs are in high demand at the moment as buyers look to secure lambs weighing late 30’s and early 40’s, and well fleshed types of all breeds hitting the highlights. JE Burrow hanlith had top price of the day at £185 or 411p for 45kg Beltex. The same vendor made £178 twice or 445p of 40kg and 434p of 41kg.
EP&JM Hutchinson sold to £174.50 with 43kg Beltex or 406p, and RA&SE Spink of Rookwith Ripon made  £172 of 44kg. Plenty more smart lambs in the £150’s and £160’s, whilst others over 400p included RL&AR Phillips at 402p and 400p. The best of the rest 340p to 390p.
More lambs either side of 300p this week, but commercial sorts of lowland lambs easier to hit 280p plus this week.  

35kg or less
A few better pens 280p plus in the lightweight range, with horned lambs hitting 250p for34kg Dalesbred from FG Throup.

 

EWES

Cull Ewes firing on once again, even with a mixed show forward inc some plain ewes amongst these. Heavy Suffolks sold to £199.50 from DJ Grassam, Wetherby with Texels selling at £209.50 and BFL Tups selling to £204.50. Plenty of interest ringside with heavy white faced ewes with style £180+ and mediums £150-£170 whilst light weight full fleshed ewes £115-£130 lean white faced ewes with frame £105-125 whilst plainer ewes and lambing casualties around the £65-£90 range.
Mules ewes topped at £134.50 from Toothill Bros, Doncaster. Mules with weight £120-£134.50 and mediums 100+ whilst plain Mules £65-£80 depending on frame.
BFL Tups topped at £204.50 from WB Woodsworth, Bolton Abbey. 
Swale ewes sold to £109.50 from P Addyman & Son, Skipton. Full fleshed Swales generally £75-£90, with mediums £60-£75 and lean Swales £50+. The light weight plain ewes £30-£38 and plain ewes with frame £42-£58.

62 Rearing Calves to £4804 Sales Every Monday at 10:30am

A total show of 62 calves on offer today with a calf for everyone. 20 Blue bulls sold today to avg £355.
1st prize and Champion calf went to A Sowray & Son Bishop Thornton who had a tremendous run of calves forward and won with his Blue bull.

There were a good show forward mainly consisting of Blues and Natives with a few other continentals making an appearance. The show was judged by Mr Smales, Hull who backed his decision and bought Mr Sowray’s champion Blue Bull calf at £480. Blue bulls a very satisfying trade with an overall avg of £355 even including 2-3 week old Bobbie calves out of crossbred cows. Best bulls £380-£450, mediums £350-£380 and smaller rearing sorts out of Black & White cows £270-£320 with youngsters out of crossbred cows £120-£300 depending on frame.
Blue heifers met a competitive audience of buyers ringside with top price £410 going to A Sowray & Son Bishop Thornton again! Other best blue heifers sold at £360-£400 with mediums rearers £300+ and small rearers out of Black & White Cows £240-£280 with some crossbred bobbies selling at £100-£200.

Char x Bulls sold to £305 from KT Wood & Son, Bury. Lim bulls sold to £400 from G&PS Fleetwood, Mirfield. Natives a nice trade again with heifers selling to £270 and avg £196 whilst bulls sold to £260 and avg £250.

Black & Whites easier on the week with buyers requesting strength.

Numbers on the increase again with a large proportion of todays entry being Mule Ewes with Suffolk and Texel Lambs at Foot. Correct Mules Twins sold to £200, and Mule Shearling Twins to £235.
Suffolk and Continental Families a little more mixed than of late, with Texel Singles to £160 and Suffolk Singles to £158. Texel Twins sold to £290 from RJ Umpleby Killinghall.
