LAMBS
just over 3000 lambs in today, and nearly half of them (1468) scaled 46kg or more. This made the handyweight relatively scarce and as a result they were a decent trade, especially any lightweights that were well fed. Some commercial medium lowland lambs found the going tougher this week. The smart lambs of all weights generally sold very well, the handier weights (37kg to 43kg) seeing plenty of prices 350p to 400p, mediums 340p to 360p, heavies 300p to 340p depending on quality.
OVER 52kg
BL&R Lund of Walshaw had the reserve champion pen and the 5 Beltex sold at £182 per head or 343p to Knavesmire Butchers, York. Paul Baines was next in line at £175, followed by EP&JM Hutchinson at £170, both pens selling to Andrew Atkinson.
46kg to 52kg
Lancashire vendors G&MA Jackson of Little Eccleston took top price in section when their 46kg Beltex sold for £180 or 391p going to Knavesmire Butchers, who also purchased Beltex at £178 from J Midgley Luddendenfoot. Robert Riley Flasby made £170, followed A&K Kiernan at £169 for 49kg Beltex.
36kg to 45kg
The Champion Lambs in todays show were consigned by BL&R Lund of Walshaw, weighing 45kg, they made £190 per head or 422p to the judge Anthony Swales of Knavemire Butchers in York. Messrs RL&AR Phillips of Burton Leonard made £178 of 44kg, also making £170 and £169 of Beltex’s, per kilo selling prices were 422p 410p 404p 400p from this home. John Midgley continued his good day making £170 or 414p of 41kg Beltex, prices that were equalled by JG Hall & Son of Gargrave for their 41kg Beltex. Messrs Atkinson & Son made 405p of Beltex crosses.

Mule & Masham Wethers were a decent trade on the day. Trade hit £132 for Mashams from EP&JM Hutchinson and 271p from Steve Dorey of Newark. Mules £128 from R&N Carlisle of Kilnsey. With Steve Dorey again making 271p.

As part of todays market there was a Charity Sheep Sale with all proceeds raised going to support the work of The British Heart Foundation in memory of Mr Ali Shan, a regular sheep buyer in this market and many other marts across the country.
