Prime Sheep

A larger show of sheep met with a strong trade, especially for the heavy types with prices up a gear again on the week with the 46kg to 52kg weight range averaging 209p. Andrew Phillips of Burton Leonard topped at £126 with others at £120 and £117. Henry Atkinson also had lambs at £126 and the top kilo price of 308p when selling a pen of 37kg Beltex at £114. Ian Marsden from Hoylandswaine presented a fantastic run of lambs, the best of which sold for £124 £122 £120 £119 twice and £118. Clive Robinson from Tosside had lambs at £123, Henry Atkinson had further pens at £119.50, Mollie Webster form Londonderry topped her run at £120, Ron Wartigg from Thurgoland had 2 pens at £119, Ken Hird of Colne made £118, Messrs Hutchinson of Faceby topped at £118, as did D&A Livestock of Haverah Park, whilst N&K Forshaw of Alston had lambs to £117. Plenty more three figure prices backing up the strength of the heavy lamb trade. Best Mule Wethers and Hill bred lambs would be 10p dearer on the week with good types 43kg to 47kg making 195p to £2 and horned lambs in the 180’s to 190p.
Hill bred lambs were much more numerous in the entry today and an overall selling average of 201p/kg for the total entry of 2815 head was even more remarkable when it included 1,059 Mule, Horned and other Hill bred lambs.

Today we held our Monthly Show and Championship honours went to James Towler of Grindleton for his homebred Beltex crosses that joined regular buyer Hamlets Butchers of Garstang for £114. Full results and buyers below and our thanks to James Dewhirst for kindly judging.

Rearing Calves to £430 x2 (91)

Good number of calves on offer today with 91 through the ring and a healthy trade too. Chadwick and Leaver of Southfield, Burnley topped the prices twice, with two tremendous british blue bulls at £430 each at only 1 month and 12 days of age. Small heifers seemed to be the trade of the day with Aberdeen Angus heifers averaging £231.25. and Lim heifers averaging £303.33.

Black and whites easier on the week but trade was good for the quality on offer with plenty of fleshy types past the £100 barrier.
