Bank Holiday always sees a slightly depleted ringside but customers present for the lean and feeding cattle. The sample of dairies was on the lean side and the beef crosses not assured but a small show of cast cows met a good trade. Usual attendance of buyers anticipated at next week’s sale.

Prime Sheep

A tremendously busy sheep day at Skipton on Bank Holiday Monday with Prime Sheep maintaining entry levels and trade for all classes and a huge show of breeding sheep attracting a busy ringside.
Spring Lambs were keenly contested with additional buyers in the market and lambs well bid for, still mainly inside fed lambs in the entry and some vendors getting towards the end of their runs, but some fresh sorts finding very good favour at 350p to 380p, best at 442p from Neil Tattersall, these were for the champion pair, as chosen by judge Nick Dalby, and purchased by Brosters Farmshop.

Meated Old Season Lambs and heavies were a fair trade all sale long, good sorts either side of £3, and adding up to £140 to £160 in the lump, topping at £168 each for Suffolks from A Gill & Son of Knaresborough. A few vendors finishing their seasons off today, but lightweights were in strong demand so long as they are well fleshed, anything lean is discounted.

Ewes continue to be a strong trade with best Mules into 3 figures, and good hill types ewes £80-£90.

2,899 Breeding Sheep comp 1059 Geld Gimmer Hoggs and 747 Outfits Breeding Sheep with 1093 lambs at foot

A very busy day today for our Annual May Day Prize Sale of Breeding Sheep with nearly 3,000 head penned for sale.
The Geld Gimmer Hoggs sold first and this years entry was very mixed for quality, and trade was reasonably for the best end, but just steady for the next grade, with fat price looking a back up option for anything that was not at the top of its game.

However, the hoggs with lambs at foot were a firm trade all sale long, Texels £200 - £250. John & George Stapleton, Skibeden topping the sale with their first prize pen at £260, with a 2nd pen at the same money. Best Mules either side of £200, to a top of £230 from Raymond and Robert Johnson, some more commercial types of hoggs with lambs £160 - £180.

Another good show of sheep for next week, expecting approximately 500 outfits, entries to the mart office by Friday 12noon.

Rearing Calves to £470 (45)

B&W av £98.33 Cont av £354.15

Skipton Calf show was on today with certainly not the biggest turnout of calves but what a cracking trade for the calves that arrived. Pre Sale show was kindly judged by Mark Burton and chose the cracking calf of Sowray Bros as his champion and a belter of a limousin from David and Richard Pickersgill of Hawksworth as Reserve Champion. With only 45 calves arriving it meant that all the competition was focused on the calves on offer. With a lot of 4-6 week calves on show today the prices look very strong with Champion Calf eventually falling to Nigel Mason of Crowle for £470. Reserve Champion, a tremendous Limousin from the Pickersgill Bros out of one of their fleshy Friesian cows again sold to Mr Mason for £450.  Best of the heifers came from JR&MJ Moon of Wigglesworth with a big strong blue heifer reaching £390 and heading home to Dacre with Stephen and Malcolm Abbott. A nice run of limousin calves from Craig Stephenson of Kirkby Lonsdale saw a cracking trade especially with his young sweet heifers averaging £325 at 3-4 weeks of age.
