Champion at the March Primestock Show was the 565kg Limousin cross heifer exhibited by Brian Lund of Walshaw. The Champion was selected by judge Simon Duerden from a strong class before he went on to back his judgement and buy the beast for 274.5p/kg or £1551.

BREEDING SHEEP
Today we held the opening weekly sale of Sheep with lambs at Foot. Trade was brisk and numbers short of requirements. As ever, we ask that vendors advise the mart office of entries for the following Monday’s sale so that an online catalogue can be prepared to advise buyers of anticipated numbers.

The Monthly Primestock Show was very well supported and judging was carried out by Mr Chris Staines. His choice as champions were Beltex crosses exhibited by AM&HV Brown of Bedale, weighing 41kg they sold for £135 per head to Vivers Scotlamb. Hayley Baines presented the reserve champions, her 5 Beltex crosses weighed 38kg and sold for £114 each.

Trade for the smart lambs was fierce, with plenty of the best end making £3 per kilo. Nice Commercial lambs around 38kg to 42kg were a good bit dearer on the week, with this class of lamb, especially if farm assured, getting a good following. The 36kg to 45kg weight category averaged 203.4p/kg.

Hill lambs were forward in larger numbers, but they did not dent the average in anyway, good Mules weighing 43kg to 47kg making around 190p or just over in some cases. 4 Mule Hoggs were sold for Manorlands today, the champion lamb from the December sale purchased by Chris Pearson along with 3 others purchased by Anthony Hewetson have been fed by Steve Dorey and returned for sale today. The single lamb realised £110 and was purchased by Mo Alam for Lancashire Direct Halal Meat.

Month old calves making a strong trade today with blues from Church Farm Enterprises making the top price of £450 with a cracking blue and a strong trade right through for his run. Other noted strong prices was Michael Heron of Bramhope with a 3 week old black and white to £158. All calves selling well with the averages not quite reflecting the strength of the price to the class of calf.
