A very good show of 215 outfits with 319 lambs at foot forward for the weekly sale which incorporated the Annual Show & Sale of Single Sheep with Lambs at foot. Hill sheep were kindly judged by Mr Charles Kitching, whilst lowland sheep were judged by Mr R Donaldson and Mr Howard Kitching.

John Bland four-timer at Skipton ewes with lambs show Skipton Auction Mart’s late season bank holiday show and sale of single ewes with lambs at foot is a happy hunting ground for Derbyshire’s John Bland, who notched up a notable achievement in the hill sheep section when winning it for an unprecedented fourth year in succession. Terry and Elaine Priestely’s charge purchased from John and Claire Mason’s, Oddacres Herd and has been used on the pedigree Limousin “Prietec” Herd, the 2015 Gallois Son was picked out by judge Andrew Fisher before selling to David White of Horton In Ribblesdale.

619 BREEDING SHEEP An increased entry of 241 sheep with 378 lambs at foot for the weekly attracted another large company of buyers to the ringside. Older sheep with strong lambs were again in high demand and would look dearer in comparison than the younger sheep with lambs at foot. Richard Caton had top price of the day with some correct Suffolk x Ewes with Twins at £195 the outfit.

Rearing Calves to £450 (73) B&W av £147.13 Cont av £370.87 Native av £190.12 A good number of calves today and an EXCEPTIONAL TRADE!!!!!!. Black and White Bulls averaged £147.13 (av 39 days old) to £290 for a belter from Michael Heron of Bramhope. Continentals had a flyer too with Heifer buyers out in force, Fred Houseman of Church Farm Enterprises to £450 and a BB Heifer average of £392. Bulls not quite as potent but with Shaun Sowray topping at £405 and an average of £405 for all Blue Bulls, the limousins weren’t much different again with heifers outstripping their male counterparts with Bulls averaging £362.50 to £400 G Pickergill & Sons, Hawksworth but Heifers av £376 to £400 PJ&JE Bolland, Airton.

Aireburn heifer bags another Skipton dairy title Brian and Judith Moorhouse’s Aireburn pedigree herd at Hesper Farm, Bell Busk, sent out yet another champion at Skipton Auction Mart’s latest Craven Dairy Auction show and sale. (Mon, May 22)

Forward – 134 Head of Cattle, 74 Goats and Sheep, 1 Pony. A good entry of cattle for the Monthly sale of Stirks, Weaned Calves and Young Stores. Cattle were dearer than most vendors expectations with a huge ringside of customers keen for the nice entry of quality reared calves to graze and grow on. The highlight of the Monthly sale of goats was a Toggenburg Nanny with Nanny kid at foot selling for £200!

Rearing Calves to £400 B&W av £88.30 Cont av £354.67 Native av £230 Quiet show forward this week however again trade flying for these handy calves. Straight black and whites flying off the shelves with Richard Spence at £155 for his B&W bull at 4 weeks and Chris Drake at £145 for a 5 week old Holstein bull calf. Blues pretty potent also however it was a strong limousin bull from Chris Watson of Horton Pasture that topped the days trade at £400 with John and Rob Marshall making the most of the strong trade and hitting £385 for a sweet 4 week old bull. Calves continue to be in strong demand and the auction offers the best place to maximise price. Please come and drop some of and find out.

Breeding Sheep A slightly smaller show of sheep with lambs met with a blistering trade, with all classes up on the week, and an army of buyers looking for outfits. Still plenty of trade. Thomas Boothman had hoggs and lambs at £200 as did Robert & Raymond Johnson. Neil Heseltine hit £195 for shearling and twins, whilst ewes with single lambs were keenly sought all sale long, especially anything with power, Mark Lewis having 3 packets of sheep all at £158, Frank Throup £150 and plenty of others at £135-£140. Young Irish couple top dogs at Skipton with 9,200gns sale Moss Irish eyes were smiling when Brian White and Aoife Smith, a young and talented Irish couple from Naul in North County Dublin, were top dogs with a 9,200 guineas (£9,660) top call at the annual Spring sale of working sheep dogs at Skipton Auction Mart, which attracted another strong turnout of 120 dogs.
