Craven Dairy Auction (19 head)
A good day in the dairy ring and about time too, with the green shoots of a recovery in the liquid milk trade with a much improved trade met the vendors who turned out with a healthy show of milkers on offer for the late show and sale of Dairy Cattle kindly sponsored by Trouw Nutrition, Woldmarsh and NMR.
Richard Walker of East Morton was judged as having the best in show which was kindly judged by Andrew and Christine Morphett of Huby. The Champion a Pedigree heifer which was calved a fortnight and giving 32kg went onto sell for £1750 to Ken and Lynne Throup of Woofa Bank Silsden Moor. Sally Wellock of Oakworth took second and third with two sweet heifers one making £1600 the other £1850 both were hard bid for but eventually sold to John Howard, Heslaker.
David Lemming topped the cow class and received reserve champion for his efforts with the 32Litre 2nd Calver reaching £1500 and selling to the Judge. Andrew Jennings of the Abbeyhouse Herd sold a sweet 31kg heifer to £1400 and Peter Baul of Bishop Thornton saw his heifer just miss out on a prize but sell for a solid price of £1680 to The Throup family again.
The Incalf heifers were hard fought over with Olivers of Darley taking first prize and taking a grand price of £1380 for a July calving heifer.

A good show of 83 calves rolled out for the weekly sale of calves with a strong trade right the way through the sale. Graham France of Hightown had the pick of the trade with 10 Friesian Bulls between 2 to 4 weeks of age averaging £179.2 topping the Black and whites at £250, £230, £205 with Richard Spence of Sutton selling one at £210 and Stephen Marshall of West End received £190 for his consignment. Black and White calves today averaged 29.5 days of age.
A wide variety of beef breeds present today with Simmentals, Blondes, Limousins, British Blues and Aberdeen Angus and were all on the receiving end of a strong trade with the Bentley Family of Thirsk achieving the highest price of the day with a Blue Bull at £430 with a Limousin from the same home receiving the next highest price at £415 and sharing the next highest with Richard Spence of Sutton at £410. Jonny and Simon Moon of Wigglesworth sold a strong packet of blues of which all the bulls were in the late £300’s peaking at £395 with Robert Metcalfe of Brearton also in the mix at £380. Today Continental calves averaged 41 days of age right through the sale, just worth considering the price against the age of the calves.
