New Season Lambs forward in large numbers today with over 1000 head penned and sold, double the number than the same week last year showing just how well lambs are finishing this spring.

The Monthly Prize Show was held and the prizes awarded and prices achieved were as below. The champion lambs were shown by Mr Tim Robinson from Longridge. His pen of 5 Beltex weighing 42kg sold at £139 each or 331p/kg to Mr James Robertshaw and will be sold through his family business Keelham Farm Shop at Thornton near Bradford. The reserve champions were from Robert Towers of Farleton, and his 42kg lambs sold for £127.50 or 303p/kg to Vivers Scotlamb in Annan.

Generally trade was good with an overall selling average of 268p/kg or £105.45 per head.The Smart Lambs around 40kg were mainly 280p to 300p, with commercial sorts 255p to 275p. The vast majority of lambs fell into the 36kg to 45kg bracket and attracted a near full compliment of buyers. Quite a few lambs are coming forward at 32kg to 35kg but they want to be very well fleshed, however this weight category averaged 268p/kg or £92 per head. Whilst numbers are relatively short these lighter weights are attracting a good trade, but it wants stressing they have to be well finished to get these prices.

A tidy entry of Hoggs and mature hoggs sold to a very good trade, averaging 203p with the teeth up hoggs in the average. 220p was the mark generally for lowland and nicely finished sorts, 200p to 210p for the horned hoggs, and 180p to 200p for the teeth up sheep.

A nice show of cast sheep averaged higher on the week at £84 per head. Several pens of heavy lowland ewes selling between £110 and £130, Best Mules £85 to £90 and strong horned ewes £60 to £70.

A good show of mainly Black and Whites today with a number of farmer buyers making these a good trade throughout topping at a £112 for a strong Holstein Bull Calf from John and James Dugdale of Settle, however more notably was the strong average of £61. Continentals although short in number were well supported with Hayton and Stocks top of the tree this week with some fantastic Friesian X Limousin Calves making £420 and £390.

Please bare it in mind Extra Friesian buyers will be present next Monday aswell.
