Success for Calvert family at Craven Dairy Auction A strong show of 51 animals at Monday’s Craven Dairy Auction (September 28) saw success for the Calvert farming family at Skipton Auction Mart. The Calverts exhibited some fine specimens as part of their ongoing dispersal, and claimed both Champion and Reserve. They also secured first, second and third place in the newly calved cows, with Calton Bolton Tanya named the overall champion. The third calver by Sandy Valley Bolton and giving 55 litres, was judged the best on show by judge Wick Williams of Nantwich. It was picked up by Malcom and Stephen Abbott of Dacre for £1,680.

Rearing Calves to £440 (85) B&W av £96.68 Cont av £362.33 Native av £320 Another handy show of calves today with 85 on offer with a large proportion of Black and Whites up for grabs, 47 in fact. A mixed bag of black and whites today with young calves making strong prices, and fleshy calves heading nicely towards £100 on onwards with an overall average of £96.68 topping at £180 for a fantastic bull from Whitakers of Bolton Abbey.

Craven Dairy Auction (40 head) Exactly 40 Dairy Cattle forward with a wide variety of goods on offer from Dispersal Cows, Incalf Heifers, Top quality newly calved heifers to Heifer Calves. The variety of goods was met by a varied trade, which felt a lot harder than it looks. David Lawson’s pre sale Champion rightly took the top price of £2000 selling to regular Skipton supporters Alf and Andrew Townsend. Robin Jennings took the second top price at £1620 with his third prize heifer from his Stainbank herd.

Newbirks herd champion again at Craven Dairy Auction The Newbirks Holstein pedigree herd of the Lawson dairy farming family, of Mill Farm, Arthington, added another Craven Dairy Auction championship to its ever-mounting tally at Skipton Auction Mart’s opening September show and sale. (Mon, Sept 7) The reigning CCM Dairy Farmers of the Year secured a further title win with their first prize newly calven heifer, Newbirks Heliotrope 345, by the Semex sire, Curtismill Mr Sam, out of Heliotrope 325.

Fine runs of calves certainly helped with Chris and Margie Hall and Joss Lancaster both bringing good numbers along with Stephen and Eddie Jeanes of Glusburn and David Hall of Conistone Cold who both did well with some strong black and white calves.

Black and Whites were still good to sell with Angus Dean of Threshfield presenting high quality run, however it was Michael Heron who topped with a pure Friesian at £220. Continentals were also a good trade with David Smith of Sutton in Craven topping with a strong Blue Bull selling for £470. Other noted vendors were Richard Spence, John Rushton , Fred Houseman and Calvert’s of West Marton making the average £409.55. Blue heifers were also a good trade with Fred Houseman topping with Dean’s and Calverts taking the heifer average to £350.

Stainbank herd five-timer at Craven Dairy Auction Robin Jennings, who runs the Stainbank pedigree Holstein dairy herd at Hill House Farm, South Stainley, near Harrogate, bagged his fifth consecutive Craven Dairy Auction championship at Skipton Auction Mart’s main August Show and sale. (Mon, Aug 24)

Rearing Calves to £660 (187) B&W av £108.22 Cont av £390.93 Native av £257.56 A fantastic show of calves with 187 on offer, despite favourable weather conditions calves were out in force with a bunch of fresh faces taking advantage of the good trade. In the pre-sale show David Smith of Sutton Craven took top honours with a fantastic British Blue bull which ended up selling for an eye watering £650 with the Reserve Champion, a British Blue Heifer from regular supporters the Sowray Brothers topping the sale at £660. British Blues averaged £442 for bulls and £401 for Blue heifers.

Sutton’s David Smith champion at Skipton rearing calf highlight Summer show attracts bumper 187-strong turnout South Craven dairy farmer David Smith was supreme champion at the Skipton Auction Mart’s summer rearing calf show. (Mon, Aug 17) Mr Smith, who runs his Holstein Friesian commercial dairy herd at Bent Farm, Sutton-in-Craven, last won the Skipton calf championship in March, 2013, and, more than two years on, repeated the feat at the latest renewal when his first prize British Blue-cross bull calf was awarded the overall title by judge Richard Ogg, of Scunthorpe.

Rearing Calves to £570 (68) B&W av £116.89 Cont av £456 Native av £280 Good show of calves for a non dairy day with 68 on offer. A few extra faces in the calf ring today with a strong trade throughout. Quality calves were on fire again with good continentals topping out at £570 and black and whites £260. Some top notch British Blues from Church Farm Enterprises, Richard Sutcliffe and Colin Whitelock taking the entry of 14 to an average of £481. Blue Heifers were a similar statement with Richard Shuttleworth helping the cause with an average of £400.83 for 6.

Craven Dairy Auction (51 head) A mixed sale of all types of cattle for today’s dairy sale with 51 head going under the hammer. Robin Jennings of South Stainley was judged to have the best beast in the market, a Pedigree heifer calved 12 days giving 35kgs which eventually sold for £1750 to Wick Williams. Reserve Champion went to the Calvert family of Crathorne near Yarm with a 4th calver which had been classified EX90 with 10gens of VG or EX behind it and arguably one of the best cows we’ve sold in the market ended up selling for £2100 to William Oldfield of Stocks Enteprises.

(Mon, July 27) Mr Jennings, who runs the Stainbank Holstein dairy herd at Hill House Farm, South Stainley, Harrogate, landed top honours for the third consecutive show with his first prize newly calven heifer, Longstar Medley Stephanie, acquired as a stirk from North Craven’s Stephen Robinson.

(Mon, July 6) Mr Jennings, who won the title at the main June show and sale, repeated the feat at the latest renewal with his first prize newly calven heifer, acquired as a calf from the Startover pedigree dairy herd of Gavin Clarke, of Brimham Lodge Farm, Ripley.
