Newbirks Blueblood second calver bags Craven Dairy Auction title Father and daughter dairy farmers, David and Suzy Lawson, of the Newbirks pedigree Holstein Friesian herd at Mill Farm, Arthingon, won their fourth Craven Dairy Auction championship of the year at November’s second show and sale at Skipton Auction Mart. Rearing Calves to £415 (94) Dairy av £53.17 Cont av £240.31 Native av £190.28 A healthy number of calves around this morning with 94 through the door. A much more predictable trade was seen today with best continentals still commanding strong money, with Paul & Janet Bolland of Airton topping the day £415 for a cracking bull calf. Native bulls were into a high gear today averaging £257 and topping at £330 for an impressive calf from Brian and Judith Moorhouse of Bell Busk, with plenty of Angus bulls over £300 this morning.

Craven Dairy Auction (17 head) 17 head arrived through the door this morning with a straight show of heifers and cows on offer. Today’s Champion came in the form of a Pedigree Heifer from Peter Baul of Bishop Thornton, giving 30kg and very sweet, she ended up selling for £2,000 to the Judge Martyn Jennings of Cowling.

Peter Baul and Baloo heifer bag Craven dairy championship Bishop Thornton’s Peter Baul, of the Ravensgate pedigree Holstein herd at Watergate Farm, bagged his second Craven Dairy Auction championship of the year at October’s second monthly show and sale. (Mon, Oct 22) He took top honours with first prize newly calven heifer, Ravensgate Baloo Ruby 55, by the Cogent sire, Sahara Baloo, out of Ravensgate Jeeves Ruby 47. Calved for 21 days and giving 30kg, the victor sold for £2,000 top price to show judge Martyn Jennings, of Cowling.

Rearing Calves to £520 (78) Dairy av £73.38 Cont av £304.8 Native av £177.76 £520 was the top call of the day at today’s autumn calf show with a healthy trade throughout. The champion calf presented by Shaun Sowray of A Sowray & Son, Bishop Thornton was an exceptionally well shaped British Blue bull and sold for the highest price of the day. Limousin’s saw some heady prices too with bulls averaging £381 and heifers £277, Native bulls saw some fierce competition with Sowray’s topping again at £330 for a strong Angus bull.

The commercial dairy farmer, of Rookery Farm, bagged a championship and reserve double in the summer and took the pre-sale championship on Monday with a sweet heifer, picked out by show judge Shaun Sowray, of Bishop Thornton.

Rearing Calves to £500 (76) B&W av £71.11 Cont av £304.59 Native av £158.35 76 calves through the door this morning with a trade slightly easier in places. Natives saw a steady trade, with AA bulls and heifers averaging nicely at £195 and £170 respectively. British Blue bulls saw some strong competition with the best calf seen in the market for quite a while sold for £500, with other straight BB bulls selling regularly between £370 to £415.

Moorhouses make hay again with another Craven Dairy Auction champion Brian and Judith Moorhouse’s Aireburn pedigree dairy herd at Hesper Farm, Bell Busk, sent out another Craven Dairy Auction champion at the opening September show and sale. (Mon, Sept 10) Securing another in a long line of title wins at their local mart was the couple’s first prize newly calven heifer, Aireburn Corinthian Stephanie, one of only two daughters in the herd to date by the Genus sire, Ballycairn Corinthian, and the first to come to market. Ten days calved and giving 30 litres, the victor sold for £1,800 to Brian Blezard, of Ribchester

Craven Dairy Auction (32 head) The shippon numbers were boosted this morning with a run of 20 Dispersal milkers with 12 entries from usual vendors making the total entry. Frank Wrathall undertook the judging prior to the sale with Brian Moorhouse of Bell Busk taking top honours with his 30kg heifer selling for £1800 to Brian Blezard of Ribchester. However it was the Reserve Champion which caught the eyes of a number of bidders, the 31kg heifer presented by Robin Jennings, South Stainley sold for £1950 to Mark Goodall of Tong.

Rearing Calves to £415 (100) B&W av £81.87 Cont av £307.85 Native av £152 100 calves through the door this morning with a handy trade to meet them. All types would see good averages with British Blue bulls topping the averages at £355 and topping at £415 from J&SA Lancaster.

Rearing Calves to £420 (86) B&W av £58.38 Cont av £278.48 Native av £202.46 A good number of calves forward today for the August calf show and a good straight trade was had right throughout the sale. Fred Houseman took the best in show with a cracker of a British Blue bull by Genus Sire Dev which eventually sold for £420. Continental bulls were a straight trade throughout with a section average of £333.57 which included a run of plain, younger bulls easing the average overall.
