Runaway success for Rathbone flock at Skipton Beltex winter highlight The Northern Beltex Society’s fourth winter show and sale of pedigree in-lamb ewes at Skipton Auction Mart produced championship, reserve championship and top price successes for the Rathbone pedigree flock of North Craven father and daughter, Michael and Becky Davis, of Ravenshaw Farm, Eldroth, (Sat, Dec 15) Their title winner was the first prize March-born ewe lamb, Rathbone Anushka, by Holmebeck Tonto, a third prize winner at this year’s Great Yorkshire Show, who has bred ram lambs to 3,000gns, out of the home-bred Rathbone Tipsy, a grand-daughter of the Davis family’s highly regarded Rathbone Leader, who has produced shearling rams to 9,000gns and shearling gimmers to 4,800gns.

Calderdale success at Skipton Winter Texel highlight The champion and reserve champion were also the top price achievers at the 23nd annual Northern Area Texel Sheep Breeders Association’s winter show and sale of pedigree in-lamb females. (Sat, Dec 15) Victory went to the first prize shearling ewe from former Northern Area chairman Spiros Spyrou’s Gib Farm pedigree flock in Hebden Bridge, with his February, 2014-born daughter of the 4,500gns Deveronvale Superb, who was also responsible for Mr Spyrou’s supreme champion at the association’s annual two-day pedigree September highlight at Skipton two years ago.

Upsall herd’s day to remember at Skipton Shorthorn highlight Britain’s oldest Beef Shorthorn herd, run by The Hon Gerald Turton at The Grange, Upsall, near Thirsk, made it an Armistice Day outing to remember when once again proving the standout performer at the sixth annual show and sale of pedigree Beef Shorthorn cattle staged on behalf of the North of England Beef Shorthorn Club at Skipton Auction Mart, which attracted a record entry at the venue.

66 Pedigree Charollais Females on behalf of The BCSS Females were in strong demand at the British Charollais Sheep Sale held at Skipton on Saturday, with a strong clearance rate, the best seen for several years. A strong commercial trade underpinned the day, whilst there were some higher top end prices. Charles Marwood’s Foulrice flock twice hit 1,000gns, the first for the days champion. This strong shearling by Langstone K2, a Wraycastle i-pod son, she sold carrying triplets to Lowereye Neils Favourite to DB Roberts of Shrewsbury.

CCM Auctions held their Annual Sale of Rams at Skipton Mart on Friday. With selling today spread across 4 sale rings the market was full to capacity with breeds covering the main sales for Blue Faced Leicesters, Suffolks, Hampshire Downs, Blue Texels and Zwartbles together with second sales for Texels, Charollais, Beltex and other breeds.

Hampshire Down females hit 500gns twice at Skipton Top bids of 500gns were paid twice for Hampshire Down females at the breed association’s annual North East region show and sale at Skipton Auction Mart. (Fri, Oct 2) First up at 500gns was the first prize winning Graylen shearling ewe from Cumbrian breeders Graham and Judith Galbraith, in Endmoor, Kendal, who were responsible for the Skipton show champion in both 2012 and 2013.

FORWARD: 682 HEAD OF REGISTERED LLEYN SHEEP CCM Auctions conducted the Annual Sale of MV Acc Registered LLeyn Sheep at Skipton Mart on Thursday for members of The Lleyn Sheep Society. Champion was a shearling Ram (Lot 48) from WJ&DJ Williams which sold for 500gns and joins Miss H Dean of Appleton Roebuck. The Williams family also had the 1st Prize pen of Ewe Lambs these sold for £125 per head and travel to Dunfries with J Kingan. 1st Prize pen of Shearlings came from JK Goldie these sold for £205 per head and join H Metcalfe of Silsden.

Lleyn Society seasonal finale at Skipton ends on a high note The Lleyn Sheep Society’s annual seasonal finale, the registered show and sale at Skipton Auction Mart, finished on an upbeat note, with strong clearance rates seen across all sections. (Thus, Oct 1) An encouraging shearling ram trade produced bids for most entries, with Wharfedale breeders Mark Shields, of Plum Tree Farm, Timble, Otley, topping the section and the day’s selling prices at 1,000gns with his one and only entry, sired by a Laga ram, out of a home-bred ewe. The buyer was North & East Lleyn Breeders Club secretary Linda Barnard, of Hall Farm, Welham, Malton.

Towell Texel tups top in show and on price at Skipton breed showcase South Craven Texel sheep breeder David Towell marked his return to the Northern Area Texel Sheep Breeders Association show arena after a seven-year break with an eye-catching double - supreme championship and top price coups at the 34th annual two-day show and sale of pedigree rams and females at Skipton Auction Mart. CCM Auctions conducted the Northern Area Texel Sheep Breeders Club Sale at Skipton Mart – Leading price at the Northern Area Texel Breeders Club Sale was the 4000gns paid by Mr George Wilkinson of Aspatria for ‘Moor Top Vodka’ a shearling ram by the ‘Procters Pay As You Go’ son Wigglesworth Spellbound consigned by David Towell of Glusburn. Vodka was selected from an exceptional pen of shearling rams which went onto average £1910 and included the first prize shearling ram and overall Supreme Champion ‘Moor Top Vegas’ which made 2000gns and Moor Top Vip which made 3000gns.

Ramsbottom ram champion at Skipton Charollais highlight Galtres rams were responsible for both the champion and reserve at the British Charollais Sheep Society’s annual show and sale of commercial rams at Skipton Auction Mart. (Tues, Sept 15) The title winner was the first prize shearling ram from Red Rose breeder Mark Worthington, who runs the Moss Side pedigree flock at Higher Moss, Ramsbottom. His January, 2014-born shearling, one of twins by the Netherton Highland Prince son, Galtres Lynz Unstoppable, was acquired by Mr Worthington, who established his flock in 1990 and currently has 30 breeding ewes, at last year’s early Builth Wells sale in Wales. He has also bred sons to 1,000gns.

BELTEX SHEEP SOCIETY ANNUAL SHOW & SALE OF PEDIGREE RAMS AND FEMALES Leading price at the annual show of Beltex Breeding Sheep held under the auspices of the Beltex Sheep Society was a shearling ram ‘Signature Waiter’ shown by George Cropper of the Hudhey flock in Baxenden . bred from a Glantre Norris ewe, Clary Naevus son joined Rob Lambert of Wigglesworth for 2500gns. Karen SHuttleworth of the Heber Park flock of Gargrave produced the Woodies Ringleader son Heber Park Well-fit, a shearling ram which took second prize in a strong class and sold to EJ&AM Fox of Symonton for 2000gns. The first prize shearling ram was Elizabeth McAllisters Artnagullion flock with a ram by Grahams Ringo selling to Michael Hall of Airton for 1600gns.
