Skipton Hampshire Down females peak at 750gns Hampshire Down ewes sold to a top of 750gns at the breed association’s north east sale in Skipton on Friday 30 September. Sale leader at 750gns was a Wilstrop bred shearling ewe by Whitehead Dylan from Graham and Judith Galbraith, Kendal, Cumbria, to R Melling, Scarisbrick, Lancashire. The Galbraiths offered a homebred shearling ewe by Graylen d’Artagnan at 550gns to Dutch breeder, Peter Beers, whilst they also sold a Clogherny Hogan sired ewe lamb at 420gns to AW Jones, Wymondham, Norfolk.

CCM Auctions conducted the Northern Area Texel Sheep Breeders Club Sale at Skipton Mart – FEMALES James Robinson’s ‘Kaker Mill’ flock from Carnforth headlined the Evening sale of females when his 3 rd prize Shearling Ewe bred by ‘Sportsmans Tremendous’ out of a ‘Hilltop Predator’ bred ewe made top price of 2100gns when selling to Mesrs HW&SW Jones of Llansannan.

Father and daughter to the fore at Skipton Charollais showcase Charollais sheep breeding stalwarts, the Marwood family, who both farm near York, were the standout performers at the British Charollais Sheep Society’s annual show and sale of commercial rams at Skipton Auction Mart.

On his first visit to Skipton, Stuart Wood from Skene, Aberdeenshire topped the sale with a Shearling Ram from his Woodies Flock. Rene de coquilanout sired by perfect received fierce bidding and fell at 4,000gns to Richard & Mark Ireland of Whalley. There was a host of prices either side of 2,000gns with the Rathbone Flock of Mike Davis, Eldroth next in line at 2,400gns. This ram lamb a son of Buckles Whizz Kid out of a homebred Dooley Nissan daughter sold to Neil & Janet McQuistin of Newton Stewart.

At the final sale of Craven Cattle Marts Ltd Pedigree month the leading price was Siddall Jerry a 2014 Limousin Bull sired by Siddall Drew consigned by Paul Fletcher of Heywood. Siddall Jerry was awarded reserve championship and joined WH&MA Keighley of Otley for 2200gns. BLR Lund of Walshaw reducing the Walshaw herd of Parthenais Cattle saw Walshaw Leo a 2015 son of Willow Creek Frankie lead the section at 1700gns. Pathenais maiden heifers were strongly contested lead by the 2015 Walshaw Lady at 1900gns.

Siddal Limousin herd sweeps board at Skipton multi-breed beef showcase Paul Fletcher, who runs the Siddal pedigree Limousin herd at the farm of the same name in Birch, Heywood, between Bury and Rochdale, won both show classes with his bulls at the Ling Fields Beef Cattle Fair, the annual multi-breeds show and sale of beef breeding cattle at Skipton Auction Mart. The Gunnerfleet herd of Jim and Ian Handley from Chapel Le Dale led the prices on Craven Limousin Day 2016 with Gunnerfleet Jumbo. This 2014 born son of Cloughhead Umpire was placed second in class 4, the middle class of Intermediate Bulls, before his successful sale to Rodney Bros of Healugh for 4,900gns. Following closely behind at 4,600gns was the first prize senior bull (Class 1), consigned by the Tomschoice herd of JM&SP Cooper of Dacre. The 2013 born stock bull Carwin Icarus has been a great servant to the Tomschoice herd and remained in Nidderdale when selling to Ian and Stuart Barritt of Braisty Wood.

‘CRAVEN NATIVE DAY’ SHOW & SALE OF 20 PEDIGREE CATTLE Top call in the bulls at the Craven Native Day was the 2015 born Crookrise Walter bred and shown by Mesrs G&MA Lawn of Skipton and sold to Wallbank Farms of Wyresdale for 1350gns. Weston & Co of Rathmell produced the 2014 Hereford Bull Capple 1 Christopher which sold locally to Roger Dakin of Hellifield for 1200gns.

Blue Wednesday Judge – Rob Walker At 4,200gns Greystone Judge headed up the British Blue Fixture ‘Blue Wednesday’ at Craven Cattle Marts Ltd, Skipton. The 2014 homebred son of Greystone Hoover was shown by Messrs Coates of Rainscar and bred from easy calving lines found favour with Gargrave dairy farmer Colin Whitelock, who is a producer of high quality British Blue calves.

WINTER SALE OF IN LAMB PEDIGREE BELTEX ON BEHALF OF THE NORTHERN CLUB Forward: 12 head of Pedigree Beltex The 4th winter sale for The Northern Club saw a small entry but a flying trade with a fantastic Beltex Ewe lamb from the Rathbone flock of Michael and Daughter Becky Davies which went on to sell for 1300gns. All on offer sold well above expectation with Stuart Currie making 600gns with an aged ewe and the Davies family making 800gns twice with some strong Shearling ewes.
