Herdwicks top of the flocks at CCM Skipton native and rare breeds highlight Herdwick sheep were top of the flocks when taking both championship and reserve championship honours at Skipton Auction Mart’s annual Rare & Native Stock Breeders Auctions of rare, minority and traditional breeds. (Sat, Sept 8) With another wide and diverse variety of sheep penned for both showing and sale - over 500 head were forward in total - judge Margaret Watkinson, of Hutton Sessay, found both her principals in a strong hill and heath show class.

Suffolk Rams The early sale of Suffolk rams saw a sizeable crowd around the pens and inside the ring. A 70% clearance rate was received by the breeders today. The Champion in the Pre-Sale Show was a tremendous ram lamb presented by Geoff Richmond of Goosnargh selling for 520gns to James Foster of Bolton Abbey.

Forward: 3,480 head of Gimmer Shearlings CCM Auctions conducted their Great Annual Prize Sale of Gimmer Shearlings at Skipton on Tuesday, with a nice entry of sheep put forward for sale. Continental sired sheep were a sharp trade, and well in front of most vendors expectations, with strong framed, clean headed sheep finding a very strong enquiry from the ringside, and the average showing a rise on the year.

Some Hoggs with Lambs today topping at £195 for Texels from ASE Crisp & Son, others at £190 from the same home. Mules to £175 from HF Stubbs. Some flock age Texels with twins around the £180-£190 mark, whilst single outfits with strong lambs were a sharp trade ranging from £120 to £140. Some older Hill bred sheep with singles £80 to £95 the outfit.

John Bland five-timer at Skipton ewes with lambs bank holiday show Derbyshire’s John Bland notched up a fabulous five-timer on his annual visit to Skipton Auction Mart’s late season bank holiday show and sale of single ewes with lambs at foot. (Monday, May 28) Mr Bland, of Crowden House Farm, Crowden, won the horned show class for the fifth year in succession with a Swaledale shearling ewe by a home-bred ram with her single pure-bred gimmer lamb at foot, got by a Paul Ewbank tup. The pair sold locally for £225 to Jeff Throup on Silsden Moor.

2,899 Breeding Sheep comp 1059 Geld Gimmer Hoggs and 747 Outfits Breeding Sheep with 1093 lambs at foot A very busy day today for our Annual May Day Prize Sale of Breeding Sheep with nearly 3,000 head penned for sale. The Geld Gimmer Hoggs sold first and this years entry was very mixed for quality, and trade was reasonably for the best end, but just steady for the next grade, with fat price looking a back up option for anything that was not at the top of its game.

May Day bank holiday show feast at CCM Skipton A May Day bank holiday bonanza at Skipton Auction Mart featured multiple shows for breeding sheep, calves and primestock. (Monday, May 7) On a traditionally busy day, almost 3,000 head of breeding sheep were penned for sale, comprising 747 outfits of hoggs with 1,093 lambs at foot and 1,059 geld gimmer hoggs.

630 Breeding Sheep (235 Sheep with 362 Lambs at foot, 33 Store Hoggs) Numbers steadily on the rise and more customers at the ringside as grass starts to appear, trade was up for the smart outfits by around £10-£15, older ewes with lambs £5-£10 dearer. Towers power again seen in CCM Skipton sheep show arena Red Rose farmer Robert Towers, of Camp House Farm, Farleton, has hardly put a foot wrong in the sheep show arena at Skipton Auction Mart this year. His latest success was a first prize success in the Easter show and sale of ewes with lambs at foot, following multiple prize wins at the opening ewes with lambs showcase, as well as a championship and reserve championship double at the Easter prime lambs highlight, both staged last month. Many of his frontrunners have also achieved top prices.

A large show of Store & Breeding Sheep forward for sale and quality outfits in high demand, especially younger ewes with strong lambs at foot. The 226 outfits of sheep with lambs topped at £230 for Texel Shearlings and Twins from Alan Midgley, Luddendenfoot, the same vendor with two further pens at £220. Peter Simpson of Dacre had a nice run of Texel Ewes with twins, topping at £228 and £225, with Andrew Throup of Silsden selling Texel Ewes and Twins to £225.

Robert Towers field day at CCM Skipton Red Rose breeder claims double success in Easter prime lambs show Red Rose sheep farmer Robert Towers, of Camp House Farm, Farleton, near Lancaster, had a field day at Skipton Auction Mart, on Monday, when exhibiting both the champion and reserve champions at the headline Easter prime lambs show, along with the first prize pen of pairs at the opening show of ewes with lambs at foot.
