The March Show produced a handful of exceptional cattle which brought Phil Gregory back to the sale to stock up for his Bacup retail shop. Both his purchases were from the heifer class, the second prize British Blue cross heifer weighing 565kg from S&P Scriven of Elslack which led the way at 281.5p/kg or £1590 and the third prize a 580kg British Blue cross from Mesrs CD&RF Kitching of Threshfield which made 280.5p/kg or £1627, the days leading gross. The first prize heifer and reserve champion also came from CD&RF Kitching another British Blue cross at 262.5p/kg weighing 600kg and one of many purchases made by Robert Pearson on behalf of Ralph Pearson, wholesale butchers from Bradford. Pearsons also included the leading priced steer and overall champion a 560kg shapey British Blue from CD&RF Kitching which made 279.5p/kg or £1565. Of the 19 prime cattle forward 8 made 260p/kg or over and the varied selection of the remainder included 3 B&W heifers and a commercial offering which continue to sell well up to 238.5p/kg.

3,747 Prime Sheep comprising 3274 Prime & Lightweight Hoggs & 473 Cast Ewes & Rams
Numbers taking the seasonal increase as sheep from root crop feeders now coming on stream and available for sale, especially from Eastern vendors with several wagons arriving today from Norfolk, Lincolnshire, Derbyshire, South Yorkshire and Vale of York, supplemented by regular Cheshire, Lancashire and Northern vendors.
Handyweighted sheep were good to sell as expected, whilst quality runs of fed mediums were in high demand. Heavies were good to sell as well, although commercial mediums and heavies were probably a shade less, whilst the smart end today were not up to recent high rates, with 350p to 380p the mark for the best end as these met resistance in relation to previous weeks extreme high rates. Heavier hill bred sheep would be a shade easier, whilst handyweight and lightweight hill lambs were still a sharp trade. Overall average at 280p or £121.53 still an exceedingly good average though for the time of year.
Top price lambs today from DN&D Capstick at £159 or 384p, other best lambs 350p to 380p, next grade 310p to 345p and commercials handyweights 270p to 310p. Heavy Continentals £130 to £155 depending on weight and quality, mediums £120 to £135.
Mules still seeing best heavy pens mid to late £120’s topping at £130, mediums generally £115 to £120, and 40/42kg £106 to £115 depending on quality.
Horned lambs a sharp trade again, especially nice wethers 250p to 270p, next grade 230p to 250p.
Today we held our Monthly Show of lambs and Nick Dalby undertook the judging with the following prizes awarded.
Heavy Lowland lambs 46kg and above,
