Prime Sheep
An increased show of sheep this week met with a trade that just had the edge off it for the commercial lambs when compared to the previous weeks highs, as one or two customers just showed a resistance to giving the prices seen last week. However, smart lambs still seeing several pens topside of £4 per kilo, and best butchers Old Season Lambs £150 to £170, and Spring Lambs £155 to £165 for the best sorts on the day.
Spring Lambs.
A decent show of lambs today for butcher customers looking to stock up shop shelves for Easter and an additional buyer taking advantage of the greater numbers to secure supply.
Lambs peaked at £168 on two occasions, first from RJ&J Towers of Ingleton who sold Charollais crosses purchased by Knavesmire Butchers in York. Then from Charles Marwood & Son of Whenby, York who also sold Charollais at £168 to Joe Bosworth.
Top price per kilo 392p when Messrs Marwood sold a pair of Charollais weighing 40kg at £157 each to IH&J Hewitt for their retail butchers shop in Riddlesden, Keighley.
Lambs averaged 336.7p. Next week is the Easter Show & Sale where there will be classes for Single Lamb and Pair of Lambs. Please advise entries to the Mart Office.
Beltex Old Season Lambs:
A nice trade for the smartest end with 7 pens at £4 kilo or more and another at 350p plus, and a breed average of 353p.
A&B Simpson, Derbyshire took top kilo honours at 451p when selling 35kg Beltex at £158 to Knavesmire Butchers.
Nick Capstick of Bolton by Bowland was also up the charts at 436p with 38kg at £166 per head again going to Knavesmire Butchers. Mr Capstick also made 400p on three further occasions when selling 43kg at £172 to Knavesmire Butchers, then 40kg at £160 and another pen of 43kg at £172
Walter Parkinson of Garstang had a cracking run of lambs with 421p, 38kg at £160 and 405p, 40kg at £162 with both pens selling to Vivers Scotlamb. Messrs Atkinson, Kettlesing sold Beltex at £170 or 395p.
Other Continental Old Season Lambs:
Best Heavies were a good trade again today with £160 to £175 a typical price range for the good sorts.
EP&JM Hutchinson Faceby led the way at £175 selling to Worsley Wholesale Butchers, with the same combination trading lambs at £173 per head as well. Messrs Hutchinson had further pens at £170 to Worsley Wholesale Butchers, £170 to Vivers Scotlamb, £168 to Kendalls Farmers Butchers of Harorgate & Pateley Butchers and then £168 to Knavesmire Butchers. Thomas Boothman of Linton made £174 of Texels as these also were purchased by Worsley Wholesale Butchers.
Handy weighted lowland lambs were generally either side of £3kilo for decent sorts, and lightweights were short of requirements seeing some lambs 310p to 330p.
Mule and Masham Wethers –
Generally a bit harder going for these today. Some good heavy pens touching £135 to £140 like last week, but the next grade would be £2/£4 a piece less as the breed average stood at 265p this week.
Other hill bred lambs:
Horned lambs a sharp trade without the overall quality of recent weeks, especially for the lightweights. But still decent sorts 240p to 250p, nice prime weight Swale/Dales wethers 240p to 265p. Swaledale averaging 258p. Some good Scotch Black Faced Hoggs about and best end trading away 280p to 295p, breed average 289p. Cheviots and other similar hill bred lambs seeing handier weights approaching 300p, and breed averages 270p to 280p region, Cheviots topping at 293p from S Forshaw & Son with a nice run of 43kg 46kg lambs.
Ewes –
Another good show of nigh on 500 head and an Overall Ewe average £112.
