Prime Cattle (under 30 mos)
A clean sweep for CD&RF Kitching from Threshfield in the cattle section in a light Bank Holiday show. Trade picked up again from last week with cattle needed for a short week. It was also a near clean sweep for Bradford wholesalers, Ralph Pearson gathering the top gross priced animal a Bazadais cross steer weighing 625kg at £1666 and the leading price by weight at 270.5p/kg (£1609) from the pen consigned by Mesrs Kitching. Robertshaws Farm Shop from Thornton accounted for the top priced heifer by weight at 269.5p/kg, a 595kg Limousin also from Mesrs Kitching. Steers averaged 268p/kg and heifers averaged 250.13p/kg including a 685kg heifer at 215p/kg.

An entry comprising all Black and White dairies across the range of specs. At the better end cattle with finish are 140p/kg and the lean end 108p/kg. Supply of cast cows is tight and the outlook looks good.

Prime Sheep
The Easter Monday Bank Holiday made no difference today with a good show of sheep forward and a cracking trade right through, 40 Spring Lambs were was short of buyers requirements and averaged 402p/kg. 2300 Hoggs averaged 315p overall or £140.46 per head, and Ewes levelled at £106.52.
Spring Lambs.
More Lambs required today, with numbers short of what was needed. Top price of £192 was paid to RJ&J Towers Ltd, Ingleton for a pair of 45kg lambs making 426p purchased by L Brown. Followed at £187 by C Marwood & Son, Whenby with 3 Charollais at 44kg purchased by J&B Fitton Ltd Oldham. Messrs Marwood sold 4 other pens of lambs from 419p to 424p. Better lambs achieving £170 to £185, overall selling average at £166.79 or 402p.
Hoggs.
An absolutely storming trade from start to finish, and the whole sale for hoggs levelled at 316p/kg (SQQ 322p) or £140.46 per head. There was shortage of the very best today which makes the fantastic average look even more astounding, but still 15 pens 400p or more, and the tops at £196 per head or 44kgs at 445p/kg from Stuart Forshaw Longridge selling to Brayton Farmshop. Others in this price bracket were EP&JM Hutchinson 425p 418p and 4 others pens over £4, JE Burrow 424p 400p, Walter Parkinson 424p 415p, HB Atkinson 417p 415p 413p 400p.
EP&JM Hutchinson sold no fewer than 20 pens of lambs between £170 and £186, the five highest in that run at £186 £184(x3) and £183 all purchased by Hartshead Meat Co. Messrs Rowley of Rochdale sold at £183 purchased by A Atkinson.
Heavy Hoggs 52kg plus averaged £158.31, whilst 46 to 52kg hoggs averaged £149.51.
The mainstream weight range of 36kg to 45kg were the dearest of the season so far, averaging 323.7p or £136.48. Lowland lambs were 320p to 360p regular away, whilst Cheviots could command a price range from 300p up to 348p from A&K Kiernan, Blackies 290p to 320p, Mules 290p to 310p and other nice horned lambs 285p to 305p area. Hoggs needed in large numbers at the moment to satisfy demand. Have a look at the prices then give us a call.
Ewes
When the trade looked to be at the top, ewes were sold to an even dearer trade today than last week. Very few large runs of heavy ewes this week with trade being strong for all goods. Heavy continentals £160-£173.50 Mediums full meat £115-£130 and small full meat ewes £100-£110 lean ewes £92-£110. Suffolks up to £161.50 from J Bradley, Harrogate followed by HL Kitching Northallerton at £149.50. Heavies £145+ Mediums £120-£130 Smalls £100 lean ewes good to sell again. Mules dearer on the week with a total avg of £99. Best heavies £130+ strong big ewes £115-£125. Mediums £95-£108 and Lean £85+ plain ewes £65-£70 with some smalls £50. Cheviots to £152.50. South country types off the high ground £83-£90. Beltex ewes sold to £169.50 from A&K Kiernan, Preston. Swales sold to £91.50. Strong swales ewes £80+ Mediums £70-£80 Small lean end £45-£60

Calves were a flyer of a trade! A full ringside of buyers from all over the North for the Bank Holiday sale. Top price went to JP&KE Hartley, Bolton Abbey for a 5 week old Blue heifer calf at £510, selling to a purchaser from Sheffield. Blue Bulls sold to avg £400 with top prices of £455, JP&KE Hartley followed by £450 P&RM Sutcliffe then closely behind by RE Ayrton & Son selling another bull calf at £430 Best Blue bulls £400-£455 next grade £370-£400 with some smalls £250+. Angus bulls topped at £335 X2 from CW Hardy, Thornton and J Gooch, Cononley Best 4 week old Angus Bulls £300-£335 slightly smaller goods £275+. Flek bulls sold to avg £252. Black and White bulls selling to a range of buyers with all prices very desirable. Trade topped with A Sowray & Son, Bishop Thornton with a young rearing calf at £215 making its way over to Hull. Blue heifers sold to £510 from JP&KE Hartley, Beamsley Best blue heifers frame and style £365-£400 mediums £330-£365 and smalls anywhere with some cross bred goods £210-£280 and good coloured Smalls £280-£310. Lim heifers topped at £318 from C&A Morton followed with the same vendor at £315. All Lim heifers sold at £260-£318. 4 week old Char heifers from A Sowray & Son sold at £370 & £355.

A super trade for Sheep with Lambs at Foot today buoyed by a dry day and a good company of buyers for a bank holiday Sale. A special Show & Sale was held for couples and 1st Prize pen of 5 went to Thomas Boothman of Linton who’s Texel Shearlings with Twins made £390 per outfit, followed closely with the 2nd prize pen from the same home making £380 per outfit. Nice Continental outfits of twins could command £250 to £290 throughout the sale, and best Singles £180/£190 the outfits.
Mules with Twins either side of £200 depending on age of ewe and size of lambs, whilst singles generally £150 to £170 for these types, a few commercial outfits £170/£180 for twins and £140’s for Singles.
More sheep required each week as the warmer spring days approach and buyers start to look for the good farming outfits as well as older outfits just to feed out.
