Feeding Bulls – trade very strong. Bulls under 12 months average £1156. Heavy continental bulls £1350 £1490. All breeds in the average today including B&Ws and Dairy bred beef crosses. 91 of the entry Limousins to average £1173. Pure bred Simmentals averaged £1216 and the Angus bulls averaged £1193.
Feeding Cows – numbers of beef cows reducing as calving season progresses and the trade remains unrelenting for feeders. At least 3 accounts operating on the beef continental cows which were all comfortable £1400 and upwards. Next grade, strong commercial cows carrying meat £1200 and Natives £1170. Lean first cross continental’s runs were either side of £1000.
Stores – Yet again another very good entry of cattle for the fortnightly sale, with 550 Head of Bullocks and Heifers in today’s mix including several nice runs of grazing cattle mixed in with cattle for short term keep.
Cattle Under 12mo -
Sonme excellent Spring 2020 born cattle in the yard today, with trade headed up at £1300 by Messrs T Robinson & Son, Slaidburn with a super young heifer. Other heifers from the same home at £1220 and £1210. William King from North Lincolnshire presented another excellent consignment of Limousin and Charolais cross Bullocks and Heifers, peaking at £1220 for a pair of May/June born 2020 heifers, others at similar age from £1190 to £1210. JA&JM Wade & Son Cononley made to £1180 with May born heifers. Messrs King made £1210 £1190 £1120 and £1100 twice with Limousin cross bullocks, whilst D Robinson Heywood made £1110 of Limousins as did JR Carr Hawpike.
Other better shaped retail quality cattle under a year old generally £1000 to £1100, whilst harder sorts for grazing mid to late £900’s and commercial end of bullocks in the £800’s, and similar types of heifers in the £700’s, a few plainer Native types 6m/8mo to be picked up in the mid £600’s.
12mo to 18mo
This age range was very good to sell again this week as grazing customers aim to strike whilst the numbers are there and get some under their belt. Patrick & Thomas Walker from Appletreewick presented an excellent April 2020 born Limousin bullock that sold for £1380, and John Tennant Bordley made £1310 of an April 2020 Limousin Bullock. Other Suckler bred bullocks just over a year old included GT Booth Lothersdale at £1270 twice.
Beef cross Dairy Bullocks 16-18mo hit £1330 £1300 £1290 £1265 and £1240 from D&J Coates Coniston Cold, £1270 and £1230 from JSS Verity Whitewell.
Heifers prices were mainly for Feb/Mar/April 2020 born with GT Booth Lothersdale making £1390 and £1300. Procters Farms were next inline at £1380 £1360, T Jowett Farmers Ltd £1350 and William King £1300. Beef Dairy cross better types £1100 plus, grazing types £900 to £1050.

£1530 was the top price from 3 different vendors.
Messrs Hopkinson Fair Place regularly show some quality older cattle, and today was no different, when they made the joint top price with a pair of Bullocks. Messrs Bulmer Wakefield were next to make £1530 with a super May 19 Lim cross. James & Deborah Ogden Austwick made £1530 of a pair of Limousins and then £1500 with a pair of Blue crosses. Andrew Houseman Darley was almost there with Lims at £1480 and £1460. Other Best quality sorts easily in the £1300’s, whilst £1150 to £1280 accounted for most of the rest.
