Fortnightly Sale of Young Feeding Bulls, Store Bullocks & Heifers, Breeding Cattle
Forward: 605 head of cattle
Comprising: 595 Feeding Cattle (106 Young Bulls, 35 Beef Feeding Cows & Bulls, 454 Bullocks & Heifers) & 10 Breeding Cattle.
Feeding Bulls – fewer bulls about partly down to lambing and reducing beef herd, so buyers really stepping on to fill pens with spring born cattle. Bulls under 12 months averaged £1109 and bulls over 12 months averaged £1175. Heavy bulls were £1400 and medium keep bulls regularly £1250-£1300. Light weight late spring bulls if well bred and shapely were £1000-£1150.
Feeding Cows – the best trade of the year so far with a section average of £1076, and strong competition for all types of cow. The entry of continental cows was very good but with nothing exceptional the trade had certainly moved up a gear. Plenty of cows from £1300 to £1590. First cross beef cows £1000 and upward, £1200 if heavier. Plain cows a very good trade £600-£800.
Cast Bulls – were marketed as fit for further use saw a 2 year old Limousin form D Garstang at £2200 and a 5 year old Aberdeen Angus sold at £1700.
Stores - A great entry of cattle for a Spring sale with a wide age profile from younger cattle, to grazing cattle, through to older cattle for short term keep.
Under 12mo -
Some excellent runs of Spring 2020 born cattle, with Messrs King North Lincs presenting some tremendous cattle at 9mo to 11mo peaking at £1360 for a Limousin Bullock, with most of the run ranging from £1150 to £1300. Messrs Robinson Norfolk also had another good consignment of Simmental cross cattle with 10mo bullocks to £1100. D Pawson & Sons Billinge were close behind with 10mo Charollais at £1090. The remainder of the younger bullocks were mainly four figures for Continentals and a few harder sorts in the 8’s and 9’s, but generally a very strong enquiry from the ringside for cattle suitable to graze. 79 Bullocks under 12mo in the entry averaged £1036.
Messrs King followed suit with heifers, leading the age range at £1380 with an 11mo old Limousin, 16 other similar beast in the run from £1100 to £1300. Dave White from Hebden, well known for nice butchers types, took £1140 for a Limousin under 12mo. 81 Heifers under 12mo averaged £923.
12mo to 18mo
This age range including a larger amount of Beef-Dairy crosses nowadays, and these types of Blue & Limmy cross Bullocks and heifers finding an exceedingly good enquiry today from customers looking for genuine grazing cattle, many bullocks stretching nicely into four figures at £1050/£1100, a few nearer 18mo a shade over with Messrs KM&L Throup Silsden at £1300 for Angus.
Best suckler bred sorts taking another gear though, Messrs King at £1360 with Bullocks just over a year old, Seth Blakey Bolton by Bowland £1230 for Charollais Bullocks a similar age.
Heifers in this range topped at £1400 for a 17mo Limousin Heifer from Rick Bamforth Denby Dale, £1350 for 15mo Limousin from Messrs Bulmer Wakefield, £1270 £1260 £1250 for 12/13mo Lim/Charolais from Messrs King and £1230 for 17mo Dairy Blue cross Heifers from KM&L Throup. Heifer age range av £1043.
Over 18mo
Andrew Houseman Darley peaked the section at £1410 with some nice Limousin Bullocks rising 2 years old. S Norcliffe, Scammonden was close behind with Charolais at £1400, and a run of vendors achieving £1350 including KM&L Throup, E&MA Burrow & Son Lancaster with Dairy Blue crosses, and AJ Wade Oswaldtwistle with Limousin crosses. Many Dairy Beef crosses from £1150 to £1300, and best Beef bred older bullocks £1250/£1300 plus. 95 Bullocks over 18mo of all breeds (Cont/Native/B&W) averaged £1208.
Older heifers were very good to sell today with all feeders keen for anything with the potential for short term keep. Andrew Houseman took £1490 and £1460 home for Limousin Heifers, Messrs Bulmer Wakefield achieved £1410 for Lim x Heifers, Rick Bamforth Denby Dale had £1410 and £1380. Many nice runs of Dairy crosses £1100 to £1290, and the younger end of the range £1000/£1150. 85 Heifers over 18mo av £1,114.
Native & Dairy Bred
Native cattle a fiery trade today! Probably most notable was a pen of 14 Saler bullocks in the ring, sold in one hit, from Williamson Bros and making £1310. Both Angus and Shorthorn bullocks topped at £1300 from B Lancaster & Son, East Marton and KM & L Throup, Silsden. Native feeding bullocks with size £1210-£1300 slightly leaner feeding bullocks £1100-£1180. £1040-£1100 for small end. Turn out Angus bullocks all £950-£1100. Turn out/ long term Shorthorn bullocks £800-£990. With some turn out/ feeders with some weight £1000-£1080. Herford Bullocks sold to £1310. Lean feeders depending on size in price range £1050-£1185. Feeding Angus heifers with leg £1060-£1135 slightly smaller feeders either side of £1000. £860-£950 for turn out heifers. Black and White bullocks met a serious demand with increased interest on the fortnight. Trade topped at £1180 for a single Black and White from JN&J Rennard, Beamsley. Largest end £1000-£1070 and younger turn out goods at the 14-16 month age £660-£820.
