LLEYN PRESS - MONDAY 1ST OCTOBER 2018

Hamish Goldie victorious at annual Skipton Lleyn highlight Scottish breeder Hamish Goldie, from Calrencefield, Dumfries, was crowned champion at the Lleyn Sheep Society’s annual registered show and sale at Skipton Auction Mart.(Thursday, Oct 4) The Skipton regular lifted the title with his first prize pen of five shearling ewes, which topped the class selling prices at £165 per head when joining MD Shields in Thirsk, who also purchased the third prize winners from the Orchard Lleyn Flock for £145. Mr Goldie also sold a £160 pen to Rosneath Farm, Argyll.

Fortnightly Catalogue Sale of Store Lambs & Breeding Sheep Forward: 6053 Head, Overall av £55.21 A nice show of lambs forward on Wednesday for CCM Auctions Fortnightly sale at Skipton Mart and in the end a nice trade ensued. With grass keep short and prime lambs just a bit steadier this week, the sale started slowly, but soon found a rhythm, and the medium to short keep lambs were in very strong demand, especially stronger Mule Wethers which were generally £55-£60, handier wethers early £50’s.

Irelands are victorious again in prime sheep show Father and son, Richard and Mark Ireland, claimed the prime sheep championship again for October after winning last month at Skipton Auction Mart. The Irelands, of Heys Farm, Whalley, were victorious with a pen of 5 Beltex crosses, which sold at £110 each, to Paul Watson, of Hellifield, who also bought the first prize mule class pen, from ASE Crisp, of Calton, for £82 per head.

Mark Smith of Winterburn returns to claim Craven Dairy Auction championship Mark Smith, of Winterburn, August’s Craven Dairy Auction championship winner, returned to claim top prize again at the October 1 show. The commercial dairy farmer, of Rookery Farm, bagged a championship and reserve double in the summer and took the pre-sale championship on Monday with a sweet heifer, picked out by show judge Shaun Sowray, of Bishop Thornton.
