Bacup butcher buys another Skipton prime cattle champion
For the second month in succession, Rossendale Valley butcher D Gregory & Sons in Bacup snapped up the supreme champion at Skipton Auction Mart’s monthly prime cattle showcase.
After purchasing both the champion and reserve in March, butcher Phil Gregory returned to the ringside for the April highlight to pay the leading gross price of £1,599 for the title winner, a 600kg Limousin-cross steer from the Critchley family, of Mercer Farm, Hutton, near Preston, who also had the reserve champion.
Mr Gregory then added the second prize-winning 555kg British Blue-cross heifer from James Drake, of Denholme, further boosting his shopping basket the same day with a third acquisition.
All the cattle were again purchased to commemorate the business’s landmark 50th anniversary this year, also the 21st anniversary in its current shop in St James Street.
Mr Gregory said: “The meat has proved so popular that I returned to Skipton to buy more cattle, including another supreme champion. Our customers just can’t seem to get enough of these top quality beef roasts, steaks and all the other popular cuts, which we continue to sell at normal shop prices.”
The meat from D Gregory & Sons’ latest buys will be fully matured before going on sale from the end of April.
As part of its ongoing 50th celebrations, the shop also ran a weekly prize draw for customers during March, with a £50 meat voucher up for grabs.
Following the first winner, Todmorden sheep farmer Andrew Barker, others were Simon Holding, Kevin and Penny Sergeant, and Marjorie Foster, all from Bacup.
