Annual Sale of Breeding Sheep ‘CRAVEN CONTINENTALS’.
Forward: 543 Ewes and 130 Rams
The sale of Ewes was well supported and carried on a similar trade to Tuesday’s shearling sale with all classes in strong demand. The day started with a reduction sale from The Gillians Laithe flock of Texel sheep from Messrs Watson of Hellifield. Their run of sheep topped at £600 for a 2 shear ewe, with most selling from £200 to £300 Each. Suffolk Females topped at £540 for a Gimmer Lamb from Pamela Lupton.
Half bred ewes were a sharp trade, young Mules finding favour selling to £140 and £130 for 2 shears from D&J Coates, followed at £128 from Matt Mason, who also made £128 of a pen of homebred shearling that had reared lambs. Older Mules to £120 for 3 crop correct from Peter Houseman, whilst older Correct sheep ranged from around £80 upto £105 for 4shear from Mike Allen. Continental and Suffolk crosses were short of requirements and more could have been sold, with £100 to £130 the range for flock aged cross bred ewes, and Suffolk crosses to £140 from John Turner.
A selective crowd surrounding the Tup ring this afternoon, however good quality shearling tups could getaway very nicely. A kind thank you to Adam Staveley and Matt Mason for judging the Pre Sale ram classes. It was both 1st Prize winners from their respective breeds topping at 950gns for the 1st Prize Continental Ram which was presented by Ann Robinson, Pannal, Harrogate. The other a tremendous Suffolk Ram lamb from Jane Soulsby of Temple Sowerby, Penrith which went on to sell for 650gns.
All in all a successful day with plenty of fresh faces ringside interested in buying Rams of differing breeds and definitely a worthwhile fixture in the sales calendar.
