The July calf show saw a fantastic amount of high quality through the door this morning with a very solid trade received throughout the sale. The pre-sale show was kindly judged by Richard Umpleby of Killinghall and went about his quickly and thoroughly. His Champion and Reserve were both tremendous British Blue calves from Shaun Sowray of Bishop Thornton. Both calves sired by the dependable AI sire Kracker saw the bull calf just pip the heifer to the top spot, however at sale time nothing could split them with both calves selling for £440.
The a strong trade throughout the sale meant for many pleased faces leaving the ring, on the whole calves would be slightly younger than previous show weeks, despite this those really sweet shapey calves could still break the £400 barrier. Best continental heifers could more than keep up with their male counterparts with the highest price calf of the day again from Sowray’s, sired by AI Sire Jack she went on to sell for £465 and its mate £440.
Native calves wouldn’t see any records broken for best calves however young calves were a pleasure to sell with both bulls and heifers 3 – 4 weeks of age regularly £140 -£150. A mixed show of Dairy Bull calves saw a straight trade. By far the best was a fleshy calf from Ralph Guy or Earby who saw his calf reach £165.
