Sammy Sudgen dairy champion at Skipton
While the fortnightly Craven Dairy Auction show and sale attracted a small turnout of newly calven heifers, these proved in ready demand at the ringside. (Mon, Apr 23)
Champion was Sammy Sugden, who runs the Brontemoor pedigree herd at Dobfield Farm, Laycock, with her home-bred 18 days calved 28-litre heifer Brontemoor Zebra Sooty, by the Genus sire, Lynncrest Zebra, out of Grinkle Rollsroyce Sooty, which also headed the prices at £1,980 when claimed by regular dairy buyer Richard Sutcliffe, of Queensbury
The Ravensgate pedigree herd of Bishop Thornton’s Peter Baul stood reserve champion with a 17 days calved 28-litre heifer, Ravensgate Fantasmic Heather 362, who hails from a prolific family. By another Genus sire, De-Su Fantasmic, she joined ringside regular Brian Blezard, of Ribchester, at £1,880.
Mr Blezard also paid second top price of £1,950 for the third prize 18 days calved 35-litre heifer, Aireburn Homestead Martha, from Brian and Judith Moorhouse’s pedigree herd in Bell Busk. This, too, had Genus bloodlines, being by Bomaz Homestead. Newly calven heifers averaged £1,832. Show judge was Marcus Chadwick, of Southfield, Burnley.
