Prime Cattle (under 30 mos)
Clean cattle met a strong trade in line with prices nationally and primestock buyer Mick Etherington once again was amongst the leading prices securing both top gross steer and heifer. The overall top price was £1546 or 255.5p/kg paid for a 605kg Limousin cross steer from CD&RF Kitching of Threshfield whilst Mr Etherington’s leading priced heifer was a 580kg Limousin cross heifer at £1488 or 256.5p/kg. Keelham Farm Shop of Skipton were buyers of the leading p/kg prices with a 580kg British Blue cross steer weighing 580kg at 263.5p/kg or £1528 from Jim Baines of Gisburn and a 540kg Limousin cross heifer at 258.5p/kg or £1395 from CD&RF Kitching. Leading buyers were Mick Etherington with 7, Keelham Farm Shop 4, Paul Ellison 3, and the remainder shared between Robertshaws Farm Shop, Thornton, Barkers Yorkshire Butchers, Skipton and J&E Medcalf of Halifax.

Cull Cow Prices
A few more cast cows forward with a dairy dispersal in the market and a similar sharp trade. Best end of the dairies nudging 140p. An odd plain cow below 100p but everything else upward with the bulk of the dairies around 130p. A few more beef cows forward with a Blue cross cow at £1331 or 149.5p/kg and at the lighter end of the entry 165.5p/kg for Limousina and 160.5p/kg for Salers.

It’s not often that lambs go up in price in August, but that’s exactly what happened at Skipton today when a great show of 3056 head levelled at £92.99 per head or 224.2p/kg (+9p).
There were some tremendous prices achieved today, with three pens £140 plus, 8 pens in the £130’s, and 32 pens in the £120’s. Or per kilo 9 pens made 300p plus, and 79 pens made 250p to 295p.
N&AD Boynton, Ripon had a successful day with lambs topping at £146 (45kg) to Vivers Scotlamb, the same vendor also made £134 and £129 with a super average of 280p or £120 for the consignment.
JC Marshall from Dacre, Harrogate was next in line at £142 with 49kg lambs selling to Brayton Farmshop, and £138 to the same buyers, £136 to Kendalls Farm Butchers in Harrogate and Pateley Bridge with others at £134 and £129. The trailer load levelling at 277p or £133.
Malhamdale vendor Michael Hall from Scosthrop is renowned for presenting quality lambs and today was no different as he led the sale at at 341p or £140 per head when selling 41kg Beltex to Vivers Scotlamb. Others at £136.50 to Robertshaws Farmshop in Thornton.
Richard & Sadie Crabtree from Clifton, Otley with 48kg continentals at £139 to Hartshead Meat Co in Mossley, and the same combination seeing lambs at £129.50.
Others in the £130’s were WM Hall of Grassington with Charollais at £133 to Keelham Farmshop in Skipton, followed by Ben Townend, Laneshawbridge at £130 to Kendalls Farm Butchers.
Others over 300p plus were Brian Lund from Walshaw at 325p, then Fairplace Farm from Cowling at 319p, Ellis Bros Addingham 312p, SN&V Jowett, Queensbury 303p, PA&NS Tattersall from York 302p. All selling to Vivers Scotlamb.
The heavy lambs sold very well today, with the 46kg to 52kg bracket levelling at £109.29 or 230.5p , and the 52kg + up at £112.12.
Hill bred lambs saw Mashams to £94 from J Verity & Son of Middlesmoor in Nidderdale, and Mules to £102.50 from Fairplace Farm in Cowling. Other Mules at £96 from Wood End Farm and £95 from Woofa Bank. WM Hall of Grassington sold Dalesbreds at £87.50 purchased by Swaledale Foods in Skipton.
Ewes very similar to last week with little difference to trade. Big Mules a touch dearer selling up-to £88.50 with Mashams selling to £86.50. Grazing mules £52-£66 Meat Mules £74-£88. White faced ewes sold well once again with D&A Livestock getting top price of £133.50 for a Texel Ewe along with GT Booth achieving the same price for his Texel ewe. Heavy weight smart ewes sold from £120-£133, heavy crossbred ewes £115-£125 lighter lean meat ewes £90+ with plain ewes fit to graze around the £60 depending on shape and size. Odd pens making less but the majority of ewes selling to an active audience depending on shape and size. Zwartble ewes sold to £111.50. Swales a mixed show some plain ewes in the £20’s the majority of lean meat ewes around the £40 mark with some more meated ewes away to the late £50’s.

Calves a serious trade today at Skipton, Blue Bulls even dearer than last week! A Total of 13 Blue Bulls sold all between £305-£465. The total avg came to £418. JF Longster sold a run of 5 Blue Bulls all 4 weeks old with 2 making £465 and 1 making £460! 2 Angus Bulls sold to £400 and £305. Black and Whites sold dearer on the week with an average of £106. A run of Black and Whites from H&M Dugdale sold from £90 to £138 and for AL Deans younger 20 day old calves selling from £85-£130. Blue Heifers sold away well to a wide audience of purchasers buying for both rearing for beef and rearing for replacements of breeding stock. Best Blue Heifers £360-£385 shade lesser £330-£360 and lesser shaped Blue Heifers again either side £270. Angus heifers again dear selling away tremendously well to heights of £325.
More calves required. Calves came from vendors from all over the North today with buyers coming from both Eastern and Western counties.

A great day in the dairy shippon here at Skipton today as we held one of our largest onsite dairy sales for some time. The sale started with regular consignors at the Craven Dairy Auction with prices peaking at £2100 with another cracking heifer from Sally Wellock of Oakworth, followed at £2080 by RW&M Walker of Laycock and another from Sally at £2040.
Then followed the dispersal of the Wharfedale Herd on behalf of JK Blackburn & Son. Trade peaked at £2280 for lot 39, Wharfedale Generate Poppy a fresh calved heifer, £2260 for lot 22 and £2220 for Lot 37. (Full report to follow)
A consignment of yearling heifers from MR&KM Hutchinson topped at £1050.
