3,257 Prime Sheep comprising 2,947 Prime Lambs & 310 Cast Ewes & Rams
A good trade all round today for all weights and grades with everything in better demand on the week, seeing an SQQ of 192.8p and an overall average of 186.3p (+6p on the week)
The Beltex and ¾ bred Texels were good to sell with the top 20 pens ranging from 253p up to a top of 282.9p (41kg £116) consigned by Paul Simpson, Bolton by Bowland and purchased by Vivers Scotlamb. The same vendor sold lambs at 280.8p followed by Alistair Jenkinson at 280.5p. The next 20 pens ranged from 234p to 248p, and pens 41 to 60 ranged from 223p to 233p. The top 20 pens of lambs per head sold from £107 to a top of £118 for 44kg Beltex (268p) from Ellis Bros of Addingham Moorside.
Buyers definitely keener for handyweight lowland lambs (Sfk-Contx), with only 19 pens of lowland 38kg to 41kg selling for under £2 kilo. A little bit heavier and 42kg to 44kg lowland lambs saw more first cross types in the 190’s and better sorts over £2, whilst 45kg to 48kg were 180p to 190p. Heavy lowlands saw smart sorts 190p to £2/kilo or £95 plus per head topping at £110, the nice sorts 180p to 190p or £90-£95, commercials £85-£90.
Hill bred lambs really working into a better trade with a good line up of buyers for Mule wethers, best end £32-£33 over the weight, commercials £30 over. Horned lambs seeing decent lightweights 155p to 165, a few pens of nice heavier lambs in the late 160’s.
Ewes were a sharper trade on the week by £2-£5.

A healthy show of calves on offer at today’s sale, with Richard Spence of Sutton in Craven topping with British Blue x bull at £420 and Church Farm Enterprises with a brace at £415 and £410. Native calves were a nice trade today with some strong calves from Shaun Sowray and Broadley farms sailing nicely into the £300’s topping at £375. A lot more interest on native heifers today meant for a stronger trade throughout averaging £188 and topping at £210 twice from JP&KE Hartley and Broadley Farms.
A very mixed bag of dairy bull calves today with the best from Mark Smith hitting £100 with younger calves in the £40 to £60 bracket today with the bulk of the show 3-4 weeks old.
Another run of 10 continental heifer stirks from Alan Twell of Lincolnshire averaged £600.
Next week is the final sale of calves before the New Years Show and Sale on the 6th of January 2019.
