James Robertshaw was the leading buyer at todays sale buying 9 in total for Robertshaws Farm Shop at Thornton and Keelham Farm Shop Skipton. Stanforths Butchers in Skipton who bought 4 accounted for the top gross and leading priced heifer a 580kg Limousin cross heifer sold by Threshfield’s CD&RF Kitching which made 242.5p/kg or £1407. Keelham Farm Shop in Skipton picked up the leading p/kg steer a 550kg Limousin cross from Mesrs Kitching for 245.5p/kg or £1350 whilst Robershaws of Thornton picked up the leading p/kg lightweight heifer from Steve Walton of Phoenix Grain Ltd, a 505kg Limousin cross at 234.5kg.

Feeders took advantage of a slightly easier trade and a high percentage of lean cattle to fill pens. The odd meated dairy now 116p/kg and not just as much spark on the lightweight plain cows.

A similar sized entry of NS Lambs were a very mixed show for quality this week. The nice skinned lambs with a bit of weight for butcher trade saw the over 46kg range average 220p. Top price per head was £124 from J Barnes Farming, Sawley with 52kg’s at £124 or 238.5p/kg, selling to Kendalls Farm Butchers in Harrogate and Pateley Bridge. Next was John Nutter from Hurst Green who made £120 of 54kg Continentals selling to L Wood & Son Scammonden. Tim Robinson Longridge made £119.50 of 49kg Texel Beltex (243.9p) purchased by Kendalls Farm Butchers. Bob Lancaster West Marton made £119 of 47kg Texel Beltex, these were also top price per kilo at 253.9p, the purchasers were Hartshead Meat Co. B Spensley Ltd Thorlby made £118 of 52kg, whilst TH Mellin Black Lane Ends made £117 of 52kg. Richard Towell Glusburn had £116 for heavy Texels and S SPensley & Co Gargrave made £115 of 52kg Texels. Messrs Hitchen Luddendenfoot made 250p of 44kg Texels at £110 each, Tim Robinson 243.9p of 49kg (£119.50), and A&EM Ashby Farnley 242.2p (45kg £109).
The handyweight category saw better skinned types 220p to 240p, first cross lambs 205p to 215p depending on quality, a couple of large runs of un-castrated commercial types under £2.
Hoggs were a sharp trade on the day, tops £113 £109 and £100 from Alistair Jenkinson Langbar, £100 also achieved by R Emmott Howden Park Silsden. Mr Jenkinson completed his run with sheep at £91 and £90 twice.
Ewes saw lean sheep very good to sell, Horned and Hill ewes mainly from £50 to £60, tops £60.50 Richard Caton Stainforth and Hill Ewes averaging £56.45. Lowland Ewes sell well for the lean types, but major resistance for overfat ewes, nice selling ¾ type Texels either side of £100, Richard Maudsley £107.50 and Andy Lambert £101.50 £100.50, Texels Ewes averaging £83.19 and a very strong an all in average for Ewes/Rams of £68.15.

62 calves through the door this morning with a healthy trade throughout the sale. It was always going to be a decent day when the first calf in the ring from Mark Smith of Winterburn got kicked off at £400 and selling for £430. A large quantity of continental calves were once again on show however it was a Charollais X bull from David Smith of Sutton In Craven which topped proceedings at £470. Next highest price was a cracking Limousin from regular supporters G Pickersgill & Sons, Hawksworth who found their calf to be worth £450.
A large run of heifers meant for a trade not quite as potent as previous weeks however best calves still made respectable prices with John Marshall of Dacre topping the Blues at £340 however Pickersgills topped the females with another belting limousin at £390 this time around.
Natives a handy trade to £255 for an AA calf from Fewster’s of Cleckheaton with native heifers from Slaters of Goosnargh realising £145 and £130. Black and whites were a two tier affair today, anything with a touch of flesh was quickly past £100 with lighter framed calves £40- £80, the section high came for a cracking 19 day old Friesian from Chadwick and Leaver at £180.

A decent sized entry for late in the season saw a nice trade for Continental Sheep with lambs at foot. Ewes with Singles to £155 and Twins £185. Hoggs with lambs this week to £155 twice.

Craven Dairy Auction (13 head)
A mixed shippon of milkers this morning with a bit of everything on offer. Topping the sale was the reserve champion heifer from GB Moorhouse of Bell Busk with his 33kg Graffeti daughter selling for £1800 to Brian Blezard, Ribchester. The Champion a nice white 29 litre heifer from Duncan Robinson of Eldroth which found a home with Tom Critchley of Hutton.
It was however the Incalf heifers which stole the show with Richard Verity of Grewelthorpe seeing two of his heifers reaching £1520 and a run of 6 averaging £1418. A couple of September calvers from M Smith of Ripley sold to £1080 for a Nor Red X.
