Cull Cow Prices

The surge in numbers of lean worn dairy cows continued with uneconomic cattle cleared before winter. 70% of cattle available were dairy and with feeding buyers concentrating on young cows, older, lean cows were harder to place. Meat was slightly easier on the week and yet assured beef cross cows remained good to sell if carrying finish to 134.5p or £955.

4,888 Prime Sheep (comprising 4,250 Prime Lambs, 638 Cast Ewes & Rams)

A larger showing of prime sheep today were a mixed trade. Best meated sorts were keenly contested all sale long, 210p to 230p for smarter Beltex types and either side of £2 for the nice Beltex types. Other Continental lambs were also around £2 for the better stuff, 180p for the good meat and 160-175p for a commercial type depending on weight. Heavy lambs were a similar trade with plenty of customers looking for meat and weight. Leaner lambs generally less per kilo although a few getting bought as stores out of the bottom end.

Hill bred lambs were forward in much larger numbers than recently and saw Mules generally £2 per head sharper on the week, the best end topping 170p at stages in the day. Some good meat horned lambs also in the 160p region, lesser ones 135 – 145p, a good average for Horned lambs of 146.5p was recorded.

Although the average shows a slight fall on the week, in truth for the quality of the show sheep were slightly dearer, and a quick look through AHDB website would show it to be a good result on the day both locally and nationally for such a big show of lambs.
