3,735 Prime Sheep comprising 3131 Prime Lambs, & 604 Cast Ewes & Rams

A large show of sheep faced a trade that was down on the week with weaker demand displayed from the processing sector, even with all the regular faces in attendance, however an average 173.4p/kg was one of the better results on the day, and given the size of the entry too. Some strong prices for quality sorts, with Kevin Huck, Bordley recording top price of £119 or 258.7p for Beltex crosses, Ian Marsden of Hoylandswaine made £109. Better end of heavy lambs in the £90’s, medium quality mid to late 80’s. Better sorts of handy weight lambs in the 180’s, commercial sorts either side of 170. Best Mules making in the mid £70’s.
Ewes were a nice trade with extra buyers in attendance and medium and best sorts in strong demand.

Rearing Calves to £395 (68)

B&W av £97.80 Cont av £274.79 Native av £210

A healthy number of calves forward this morning with once again the good black and whites calves on the receiving end of a strong trade. Stephen Marshall of West End took the top price with one Friesian X bull calves at £170 which was also matched by a strong Holstein bull from AL Dean & Son, Threshfield.

Continentals were not forward in just quite the quality of last week, however once again Joss Lancaster of Horton In Craven topped the proceedings with two of his British Blue bulls at £395. Again native bull calves were good to sell with 90% over £200 and peaking at £255 for a bull from Ralph Guy, Earby.

Heifers harder to place with less faces around this morning with blues particularly less than last week. Topping the heifers was a Limousin from Hayton and Stocks of Bolton Abbey at £390 which is on its way to making a suckler cow.

Craven Dairy Auction (32 head)

The shippon numbers were boosted this morning with a run of 20 Dispersal milkers with 12 entries from usual vendors making the total entry. Frank Wrathall undertook the judging prior to the sale with Brian Moorhouse of Bell Busk taking top honours with his 30kg heifer selling for £1800 to Brian Blezard of Ribchester.  However it was the Reserve Champion which caught the eyes of a number of bidders, the 31kg heifer presented by Robin Jennings, South Stainley sold for £1950 to Mark Goodall of Tong.

Dispersal cows from Messrs Rhodes of Ecclesfield were from a grass based system which had been hit hard by the dry weather seen throughout the summer. Mainly April calved and run with the bull, the animals were for a select audience. Overall, they were a straight trade with a top price of £740 for a British Friesian 4th Calver.
