734 Breeding Sheep (comprising 269 Sheep with 465 lambs at foot)

A much larger entry sold away to a better trade this week with a good crowd of buyers assembled looking for sheep. Two pens shared the top price of £265 per outfit, the first were Texel cross Shearlings with Twins from David White at Hebden, and this was equalled by Rosie Dunn from York who consigned a pen of 2&3 crop Texels with strong lambs. General trade was £2 to £5 per life better on the week, but there was a smaller proportion of those outfits with young lambs as vendors look to bring strength.

WEEKLY SALE OF SHEEP WITH LAMBS @ FOOT EVERY MONDAY AT 12noon.

NEXT WEEK (MONDAY 18th APRIL) TOTAL ENTRY OF 350 OUTFITS ANTICIPATED.

2,775 Prime & Cast Sheep

Sheep numbers holding well for the time of year. With 55 Spring lambs forward it again produced choice for the buyers, but vendors with “inside” lambs are coming towards the end of their runs and we await the first men with lambs from outside. Charles Marwood had tops of 280p/kg (41kg £115) purchased by Lane End Farm Shop in Tong, Bradford, whilst the same vendor had a top price per head of £120 again purchased by Lane End Farm Shop. Robert Towers, of Farleton, Lancaster, stepped up with the top gross price £122 per head Charollais pen sold to Kendall’s Farm Butchers in Harrogate and Pateley Bridge. The same vendor also hit £120 per head with another Charollais pen, these claimed by Shipley retail butcher John Kearns Ltd.

2,415 Hoggs saw everything less money on the week by around 10p, however they would generally be  dearer than late last week, and dearer than other morning markets across the region, recording an overall average of 184.7p/kg for all hoggs, Eblex shows a range of 165p to 171p for the morning competition.

Top end hoggs 230p to 268p, good meat types either side of 200p, heavier hoggs 175p – 190p for meat, but anything a bit plainer was less. A few lacking flesh still making their way out as stores at the moment.

Ewes again a nice trade with meated but lean types in best demand.

Healthy show of calves on a dairy day with 68 on offer and some strong averages right the way through.  Black and Whites definitely felt dearer than the average with anything looking like doing well on towards £100 with Fewster’s of Cleckheaton having one of theirs at £130 but Stephen Marshall, West End topped at £150 with a pure Friesian. Blue Bulls were a good trade again today with again the average not reflecting the trade. David Hall of Conistone Cold topped with cracking bull at £440 and Fred Houseman, Church Farm Enterprises £430 twice and £420.

Limousin heifers outstripped blue heifers today by £16 on average however John Marshall, Dacre topped at £365 with his blue consignment and James Gooch on top with his Limousin heifer at £340.

Calves again look young and a strong trade when comparing, with today’s average age of calves 39 days old.

Craven Dairy Auction (20 head)

Judge Brian Blezard chose David Lawson’ s pair of strong heifers as his champion and reserve with another of his quartet taking the third prize rosette which is no mean feat. The trade was certainly not as brisk as previous weeks for the middle of the road goods with many around and below the £1000 mark however the top end made up for this with 1st rate heifers averaging well into £1400’s.
