Prime Cattle (under 30 mos)
A good show of clean cattle and just the main retail buyers present but a strong demand for beef to hang until after the Christmas break. Top call at £1400 was a British Blue heifer weighing 550kg presented by Mesrs AA&E Critchley&Son which sold to Countrystyle Meats Ltd who also bought the highest priced p/kg at 261.5p/kg,a Limousin cross 515kg heifer from James Drake. Leading buyers were Keelham Farm Shop with 5 purchases for their shops in Skipton and Thornton and Stanforths Butchers of Skipton.

Meat in short supply and the plain end a little harder to sell. Fed dairies comfortably to 110p+ and steaking cows 95-108p. Demand for cast cows is likely to be variable for next Monday so keep in touch to gauge the prospects. The first sale for cast cattle in the new year will by Monday 8th January. Clean cattle will be sold on Thursday 28th December immediately prior to prime sheep at 2pm.

A very similar sized show of sheep on the week with 3,866 lambs up 1p on the week to stand at 186.6p/kg. Smart lambs were a very good trade again, but were not just as numerous as the previous week. Best end saw Fox Farms selling at £118 to Kendalls Farmers Butchers of Harrogate and Pateley Bridge. Paul Simpson from Bolton by Bowland had 2 pens at 300p or more, 302.8p for 38kg at £115 each and 300p for 39kg at £117. Mr Simpson had other pens at £116, £115 again and £110 twice or 287p 282p 268p twice and 262p. Jimmy Towler from Steelands made £116 of 42kg or 269.8p/kg. Ellis Bros made £116 of 46kg or 252p, Fox Farms made £111 of 40kg or 277.5p, Bill logan made £110, Nicky Capstick, Richard Ireland and John Eddleston all made £109, whilst Mr Capstick and Mr Ireland had further pens at £108. A further 18 pens made £100 or more. Quite a good list again of pens over 250p as the prices show.
A commercial handy weight lamb was again good to sell and found a fast trade at the ringside, whilst heavy lambs easily upkept last weeks prices, the lambs weighing over 52kg averaging 170p/kg.
Hill lambs were a sharp trade, with the main of the mule lambs around 170p to 175p, horned lambs though were dearer, with lightweights being especially good to sell, with nearly 500 Swaledale and Dalesbred lambs in the entry averaging 163p/kg.

A cracking trade for the Christmas Show and Sale of calves with Continental bulls a superb trade. John Rushton of Elslack was the man with the goods today with his cracking British Blue bull taking top honours in the pre-sale show with Paul Drinkall of Gargrave doing the officiating. The Champion, 43 days old sold for a majestic £570 the top call of the day with Reserve Champion from the Sowray Bros selling for £490. John & James Dugdale of Settle had a tremendous bull at £530 and another at £430 with two further calves from Sowray Bros at £470 and £450. The British Blue bulls averaged £409.28.
Best B&W’s were well fought over with 10 over £100 and topping at £190 for a belter from Richard Spence of Sutton in Craven.
A cracking trade throughout the sale with the large majority selling away very well, there is a sale next week and then there is a break until the 8th of January for the New Years Calf Show.
