Stanforths Butchers bought the leading priced animal (£ per head) at the weekly sale of prime cattle a 595kg British Blue cross steer sold by CD&RF Kitching of Threshfield making £1431 or 240.5p/kg. Top price per kg was a 525kg Limousin cross heifer from Mesrs AA&E Critchley&Son of Hutton which sold to George Cropper of Baxenden for 270.5p/kg or £1420. Leading buyers were Countrystyle Meats of Lancaster and Keelham Farm Shop (Thornton&Skipton) with 5 each. The Countrystyle Meats shopping list included the leading priced steer (p/kg) 259.5p/kg a Limousin cross and the second highest priced heifer (p/kg) a Limousin cross weighing 545kg making 257.5p/kg from Mesrs AA&E Critchley&Son. Highlight of Keelham Farm shop’s list was the top grossing heifer from Mesrs AA&E Critchley&Son which weighed 575kg and made £1423 or 247.5p/kg.

More lambs getting about, although numbers still short as most folk tell us they seem to be 3-4 weeks behind. Average weight for the sale of 40.8kg, and anything with weights 45kg to 55kg was keenly contested as this weight bracket averaged 279p. The top priced lambs on the day came from this weight range, £49 kg Suffolk cross Texels from Mark Evans of Steeton, selling at £145 each to regular buyers Countrystyle Meats of Lancaster Business Park. Country Style Meats also secured lambs at £144 from Ian and Stuart Barritt of Braisty Woods, whilst also getting Texels at £138 from Mick & Kath Hewitt of Giggleswick. Swaledale Foods got in on the action, when securing lambs from Mark Evans at £144, and off Ian Hamond, Glasshouses at £142. Kendalls Farmers Butchers of Harrogate and Pateley Bridge purchased lambs at £142 off Mark Evans, J Penny & Sons in Rawdon purchased lambs at £140 from Tim Robinson Longridge and Barretts of Braisty Woods, also £139 from Messrs D&A Livestock Haverah Park. Keelham Farmshop were also to the fore buying lambs to £140 each from Mark Evans.

 A lot of younger calves on show today with some heady prices for some fortnight to month old entries, best continentals from Fred Houseman of Church Farm Enterprises to £445 with Blue bulls averaging £383. Black and white calves a nice trade again with a straight average of £90.67 for all qualities through the ring.
