Despite slack demand a couple of extra buyers at today’s sale seeking feeding and plain cattle. A satisfactory outcome against reports of fridges full of cow beef a strengthened pound and plentiful supplies of Polish bull beef. Farm assurance does assist marketing under these circumstances.

PRIME SHEEP (4170)
A larger than anticipated show of sheep sold well on the day, with an average of 170.4p recorded for the whole sale. Continental bred export weight lambs 38kg to 42kg were in good demand all sale, getting dearer as the day wore on, commercial types making 175p to 185p (£30 over the weight) nicer sorts around 190p (£34 to £36 over) best sorts generally 200p to 240p, odd pens making more, up to a top of 265.1p for a pen of 43kg making £114 each from T&C Robinson, Tosside. David Grassam from Stockleld Park had some 40kg at £105 or 262.5p/kg whilst A Phillipson from Briercliffe had 41kg at £104 or 253.7p. Suffolk lambs were generally £25 to £30 over the weight. Mule Wethers sold reasonably well on the day, 42kg to 45kg in best demand at £24 to £28 over the weight, heavier lambs around the 150pkg mark. Horned lambs saw a better selection, nice wethers 150p to 158p.

A good solid entry of calves today with buyers a plenty for all types of calves. Black and White calves were once again a good trade with month old well fleshed calves easily making £100. Blues and good continentals were also well supported with anything half decent pushing £300 and over.

CRAVEN DAIRY AUCTION (10 head)
A small entry forward today with a number of vendors not attending due to the upcoming Christmas Show in a fortnight. Despite this buyers were out in force and with a demand for top quality cattle obviously with Robert Crisp having the pick of the trade at £2200 and Chris Broadwith at £1900. Other cattle met a straight trade with the overall average levelling at £1733 for all cattle.
