1,879 Prime Sheep

Numbers of New Season Lambs up again this week and trade in the main was very similar to last week, heavy lambs way short of requirements and some great prices per head for anything 44kg-45kg or more, smart lambs 260p plus, commercial lambs 39kg to 41kg in very strong demand, anything lighter 33kg-37kg and good meat got away 240p-260p although anything lacking that extra finish was just a shade easier than last week. The 1,472 lambs averaged 249p across the board, the strength of the trade at the moment is highlighted by a comparison to the same week last year where the average was 185p, with the overall selling average up £14 per head, but lambs definitely being sold at lighter weights this spring with todays average weight under the seasonal average at only 39.2kg.
John & James Dugdale of Stackhouse topped the sale at £133 per head selling to Keelham Farm Shop. Thomas Fall from Middleham, Leyburn sold lambs to a top of £131 per head selling to Andrew Atkinson. The same purchaser bought lambs at £130 from John Nutter of Hurst Green, whilst £130 was achieved on two other occasions, first from Simon Spensley of Gargrave selling to Country Style Meats and then from George Emmott of Steeton selling to Kendalls Farm Butchers of Pateley Bridge and Harrogate. Tony Kiernan from Longridge topped the sale at 292.7p/kg selling to Thomas Shepherdson, closely followed on two separate occasions by a price of 292.1p/kg achieved by Chris Craven from York and Kevin Marshall from Darley, both pens purchased by Vivers Scotlamb. Robert Lambert from Wigglesworth sold to 287.8p, Alex Brown from Darwen to 286.8p, Tim Robinson from Longridge to 286.4p and Thomas Fall to 284.8p.

Old Season Lambs were a fantastic trade for the 141 Hoggs and teeth up sheep, and way beyond anyones expectations at this time of year, settling at 207p across the board. Sandy Harrison from Cowling topped at £118, Stocks Enterprises £115 & £113, Bryan Dibb to £115, James Drake £112, John Thackray £111, Robert Lambert £110 and Thomas Fall £110.

Rearing Calves to £515

B&W av £65 Cont av £386.39 Native av £241

£515 was the top price of the day for the Champion calf from the Sowray Brothers of Bishop Thornton, the calf which was 6 ½ Weeks old was bred By Brennand General (A Bull bred JC Walker & Son, Dunsop Bridge) sold to Andrew Houseman of Harrogate. The Sowray’s also saw their first price heifer reach £450 selling to Nigel Garth, Addingham. A handy number of calves were on show today for the Summer Calf Show with Tony Binns of Clint doing the Judging Honours. British Blue bulls saw the best of the trade with 11 over £400 and averaging £406.92. Heifers again were a pleasure to sell with Continental heifers averaging £371, with Suckler buyers bidding fiercly for replacement heifers.

Black and Whites a tad easier overall due to a lot of plain young calves around however anything well fleshed and thriving was keenly bid past £100 and onwards, which is where the top price B&W bull from Alan and Susan Throup ended up, making a nice price of £145.

And don’t forget the natives £241 average with a stylish Hereford from JM Smith of Sutton in Craven reaching £310 and David and Dee Holmes of Castley at £280 for an Aberdeen Angus.
