The Bank Holiday gave retail customers respite from busy shops and the chance to restock with a very good entry of suitable cattle at the weekly sale. George Cropper Jnr from Baxenden was into gear with the highest gross at £1455 a 595kg Limousin cross heifer from Charles and Richard Kitching of Threshfield which made 244.5p/kg. George also added the top priced p/kg heavy heifer at 249.5p/kg to his purchases this time a 505kg British Blue heifer from regular vendors RT&J Critchley&Sons of Hutton. DA Gregory and Sons of Bacup were also able to get away and accounted for two high priced Limousin cross heifers weighing only 435kg from Simon Bennett of Silsden Moor at 267.5p/kg and 249.5p/kg. Top priced steer at £1395 was 595kg Limousin cross from the farming partnership of CD&RF Kitching which sold to Barkers Yorkshire Butchers of Skipton for 234.5p/kg whilst RT&J Critchley&Sons headed up the by weight prices at 248.5p/kg for their 540kg Limousin cross which sold to Countrystyle Meats Ltd of Lancaster. A grand show of 2400 sheep for Easter Monday and very satisfactory trade across the board, especially for heavier types which sold well in front of expectations, many old season lambs 50kg to 60kg being £10 dearer on the week.

The sale started with Spring Lambs and an overall selling average of 288.3p/kg. Trade topped at 325.6p/kg for Texel crosses from CR&M Wilson, Wilpshire, Blackburn, and these sold to GJ Cropper for his Sandersons Butchers shop in Baxenden. Young George also paid the top price per head of £139 for Suffolk crosses from Mark Evans of Steeton. The second highest per head of £135 was paid by the same purchaser for Charollais from Robert Towers of Ingleton.

Lightweight Hoggs 30-37kg were a great trade today with nicer sorts at 220p to 240p, and this weight range topping at 246p for Texel Cheviot crosses from Haddon Farms in Meltham. Horned lambs in this weight range 185p to 195p.
The handyweight Hoggs 38kg to 43kg were equally as good to sell as last week, selling to 322.5p (40kg £129) for Continental crosses from TJ Blackwell, Silsden, purchased by Anthony Swales for Knavesmire Butchers in York. The Same purchaser also secured lambs at 309p (42kg £130) from JE Burrow of Kirkby Malham. Other best lambs 260p to 300p, whilst a commercial sort of lamb was 230p to 250p.
The next weight of Hoggs 44kg to 49kg saw JM Hall of Airton made 315p (46kg at £145) to Hartshead Meat Co in Mossley, whilst Knavesmire Butchers were in again at 313p (44kg £138) from A&K Kiernan in St Michaels, nice hoggs in this weight range for the Butchers and farm shops were 230p to 250p, and commercial sorts 200p to 225p. Michael Davis from Eldroth made £142 of Beltex crosses.
Heavy Hoggs took the best lift on the week, with 50kg to 56kg types about £10/£12 dearer on the week, and the very heavy sorts £5/£10 dearer.
Best of the hill bred sheep had Mules and Mashams 220p/210p up to 221p from DR Kayley, Halton West. Best Swales to 215.9p from Jim Baines when selling 44kg at £95. Bob Stubbs from Crowton, Cheshire sold Cheviots to 228p and Scotch Blackie to 215p.

Rearing Calves to £400 (60)

First of all, a big thank you to all vendors that trusted us to sell their calves on their behalf and also bring the spec of calves I requested to fulfil buyers’ requirements. Top price calves today were two Blue Bulls first from JP+KE Hartley followed by another phenomenal calf by RM Spence, both selling to Mr BP Kaye of Stocksbridge.  Blue Bulls looked to be getting dearer week on week with farmers turning out and now needing to fill shed space up with some quality. The black and whites also saw a good sale to come to n overall average of £68. Next onto the Blue Heifers, the top price of the day came from JP+KE Hartley again at £345 followed closely behind by Mr C Watson at £335.

For all Calf enquires do not hesitate to give Kyle a ring to discuss trade. Many thanks for your continued support. 07538539077
