Prime Sheep

More Lambs about today but generally they were less weights as well with more in the 37-39kg bracket than last week, and these had to face a falling trade on the day with buyers definitely more cautious than last week. The smart types got away well, but a commercial lamb was quite clearly less money on the week and harder to place as the sale wore on. Processers cautious as the increased numbers are beginning to arrive very quickly. We could therefore see a little bit of volatility for a few weeks now so best to draw lambs full of meat and nicely finished if possible whilst balancing this with the desire to shift lambs before seasonal prices ease.

436 Breeding Sheep comprising 137 Sheep with 259 lambs at foot, 34 Charollais Females and 6 Rams

Today’s sale included a dispersal of Charollais and Mule Sheep on behalf of The Sedgwick Family from Bough Gap, Trawden following the untimely passing of Peter who along with Joan had been longstanding Charollais Sheep breeders and enthusiasts.

The sheep, although coming from a high hill farm on the Yorkshire/Lancashire border, were shown in decent fettle and were good sound sorts. The ring was packed to the rafters with friends and fellow breeders all looking to purchase stock. The Charollais’s all found new homes at what were seen to be reasonable prices, whilst the commercial sheep sold in front of recent trade, which would reflect the genuine nature of these sheep.

Church Farm Enterprises took the top honours at Skipton Auction for the Summer Calf Show with his British Blue Bull reaching £480. Michael Heron of Bramhope took the reserve champion place with a superb Aberdeen Angus heifer which went on to sell for £330.

Black and whites saw a stiff trade right through the sale with Paul Bolland of Airton taking the highest price at £230 with John Wright of Kirk Syke not far behind at £215 such a trade saw the black whites on offer reach £120.36 average, with 10 over £100.

In the native section it wasn’t just Michael Heron having a strong trade with Hartley’s Bolton Abbey  reaching £325 with a Bull Calf and Marshalls at £305, with plenty of heifers in the mid £200’s from Hartley’s and Chris Harrison of Elslack.

Continentals were hard fought over with the average for all at £356.8 and with 15 over £400. Fred Houseman of Church Farm Enterprises had the pick of the calves with his 9 continentals averaging £428. John Calvert of West Marton brought 5 well reared calves to reach either side of £400 and topping at £415 twice for his month old consignments.
