Prime Sheep

Trade was very similar to last week for the nice sorts, whilst the handy weighted lambs and lightweights were a shade dearer. Not as many best end lambs about, with last week being show day, but still some fair runs to note. James and Jennifer Garth from Keasden topped the sale at £115 with a smart 46kg Beltex selling to Vivers Scotlamb. Anthony Hewetson, with son Albert, from Bank Newton sold a great run of lambs, with four pens selling at £114, £113 and £111 twice all to Vivers Scotlamb. Ralph Crabtree from Low Snowden sold lambs to £108, as did Anthony Thompson of Foulridge, in at £105 was Martyn Jennings of Cowling and £104 saw a pen from Mike Allen of Staithes who had a further pen at £103. Completing the lineup of three figure prices were Frankland Farms of Rathmell  at £101, Jim Scrivin of Elslack and Duncan Halliday from Sowerby Bridge both sold lambs at £100.
Best end Beltex were 220p to 250p, with next grade from 200p to 220p. A ¾ Texel nice bred lambs at handy weights (38-44kg) sold well all day with better sorts 190p to 200p, and commercial types generally 175p to 180p. Heavy Lowland lambs (48kg-53kg) were generally 170p to 180p for the smarter end, odd pens of butchers lambs over this, whilst a commercial heavy lambs was in the 160’s. A Mule wether lamb sold to prices for better end in the mid 160’s, good Mashams into the 170’s, and better horned wethers in the 150’s.
A lighter show of ewes were generally plainer too, but maintained last weeks trade.
