Second Easter Show of Prime Cattle
Brian Lund took first and second prize at the second Easter Show of Prime Cattle with his 515kg Champion Limousin cross heifer heading the prices at 247.5p/kg or £1275 when selling to Keelham Farm Shop of Thornton. 3rd prize was the 570kg Charolais heifer from John and Alison Spensley of Thorlby bought by Stanforths Butchers, Skipton.

3,354 Prime Sheep
A tremendously busy day in the sheep market today, with over 3,000 cast and prime sheep for the 2nd week in April. Today was the Easter show & Sale of Spring lambs, a quality show was kindly judged by Mr Mick Etherington who gave the awards below. Robert Towers from Farleton, Lancaster again took championship honour with Bowland Foods, Meat Wholesalers purchasing the pair of 44kg lambs for £148 each. Mick Etherington stepped up to buy the reserve champions from the same farm at £130 each on behalf of Dan Woodends retail butchers in Adel, Leeds.

An increased show of Hoggs were a sharp trade, anything with a good covering a of meat and well finished was good to sell, Mule hoggs would be a shade easier in price on the week. Still a very good overall average of 206p/kg (SQQ 213p) was recorded.

The largest show of the season so far with 350 outfits and over 100 geld hoggs on offer.
Young sheep were in great demand, David White of Hebden topping the sale with Texel Shearlings and twins at £255, Andrew Bailey from Eldroth had £232 for a pen of 10 Mule Shearlings with twins. Another notable price was Chris Craven of Kexby with a lovely pen of Texel Ewes with singles lambs selling away £196 the outfit. Another nice show of geld Mule gimmer hoggs averaged £130 each.

Good show of rearing calves forward with a strong trade to boot. All breeds and classes selling to a strong trade in particular a fantastic run of Angus calves from Duncan Holme, Storiths. Top price fell to regular supporters Church Farm Enterprises for a superb British Blue bull which eventually realised £430. It was noticed that a number of farmer buyers were prominent ringside looking especially for strong calves fit for grazing later in the spring.
