Prime Cattle (under 30 mos)

 

George Cropper of Baxenden secured the highest priced gross animal a 575kg Limousin cross heifer at £1520 or 264.5p/kg from Mesrs AA&E Critchley&Son of Hutton alongside the second highest priced p/kg animal a 555kg Limousin cross heifer from Simon Bennett of Silsden Moor for 265.5p/kg or £1474.

Highest priced p/kg beast was again from the pen of Mesrs Critchley, a 530kg Charolais cross heifer selling to Countrystyle Meats of Lancaster for 268.5p/kg or £1423.

2,526 Prime Sheep (comprising 292 Prime Lambs, 1724 Prime Hoggs & 510 Cast Ewes & Rams)

A much larger on Spring Lambs today attracted an increased attendance of buyers with buyers from farmshops, retail butchers and major processors all turning their buying attention to lamb. Best end of lambs were a very good trade, 340p plus, upto 381.6p for Texels from D&A Livestock of Haverah Park purchased by Vivers Scotlamb of Annan. A top price per head of £159 was paid to Steve Buckley of Doveholes, Buxton for Suffolks by Kendall Farmers Butchers of Pateley Bridge and Harrogate. Quite a few more commercial types getting about now, making 260-280p
Old Season Lambs  were a varied selection, heavy well fleshed lambs selling to a strong trade, £145 to a top of £166 for Texels from Paul Keyes of Salwick, Preston. Brian Lund of Walshaw sold Texels to a top of 291p purchased by Yorkshire Halal Meat Suppliers, and Messrs Banks Farms, Worksop had Texels to 289.8p purchased by Hartshead Meats Ltd in Mossley.

A larger show of ewes averaged £75 with all classes selling well.

A grand show of sheep attracted another full line up of buyers and all classes sold to a fast trade. Best Hoggs again £180-£190 with singles, and young ewes and shearlings finding favour with buyers. Older sheep not as numerous now, but £180 to £200 the price range for nice sorts.

Good healthy show of calves through the ring and what a cracking trade. Best continental calves were a pleasure to sell with 8 British Blue Heifers from £400 to £460 and averaging £388, British Blue bulls weren’t far behind with 10 calves from £400 to £455.  Black and White bulls were again a strong trade with all quality averaging £92 and topping at £140 for a fleshy Holstein bull calf from J Wellock at Eshton. Native calves enjoyed a healthy trade too, a lot of Herefords through the door this morning with bulls topping at £350 for a tremendous bull from J Peel of Newsholme and heifers topped at £200 twice for entrants from ID&JC Briggs, Guiseley.

Craven Dairy Auction (27 head)

A cracking bull trade in the dairy ring today with David, Claire and Suzy Lawson presenting two tremendous bulls, both bred from the famous Newbirks Jazz family and boasting tremendous back pedigrees sold to a ready ringside of buyers. The first prize bull Newbirks Reebok, a tremendous dark bull found a new home with Gary Swires of K Swires & Co, Beckwithshaw with the other cracking bull from Newbirks selling for £1900 to Tony Swires of Stainburn.

 

In the milkers, David Booth of Broom House, Lothersdale chose the heifer from Colin Price of Keasden as his Champion with a heifer from David and Suzy Lawson taking the Reserve Champion rosette and also the highest price of the day. The Champion, a 14 day calved 27 litre heifer ended up selling for £1650 to IR&DE Wellock of Kirkby Malham. The reserve champion from David Lawson found a new home with Brian Blezard of Ribchester, giving 28 litres and calved 28 days she went on to make £1950. Jeremy Taylor of Skipton brought three fine pedigree heifers to sell and found a buoyant trade at £1920, £1900 and 1700.

 

A good show of older cows was punctuated by a tremendous 2nd calver from Ian Parkinson of Barden which sold for £1720 to JP&KE Hartley, Beamsley.

 

Incalf heifers were a flying trade with two from Peter Baul averaging £1615 and topping at £1650. The heifers due june and july were highly sought after, however both ended up with Wick Williams of Nantwich.
