Spring
lamb numbers on a sharp climb today, and this is replicated countrywide, but
trade was not just as sharp everywhere as anticipated, the sale levelling at
203.5p/kg. Best end topping the 250p/kg mark, Robert Towers had the top price
per kilo of 267p (43kg £115) purchased by Vivers Scotlamb, the same combination
also responsible for 261p (42kg £110) and 257p (42kg £108). The last of his
pens made 252p (42kg £106) to Keelham Farm Shop. Others over 250p were S Coar,
Houghton at 259p (42kg £109) again to Vivers Scotlamb, whilst Neil Tattersall
of Ellerton had 251p (37kg £93) and 250p (38kg £95) both pens to Vivers
Scotlamb. Smarter lambs generally 220p to 240p, commercial lambs 190p to 210p,
heavier lambs 180p to 200p.
The
selection of hoggs had a definite end of season feel to it, but trade also fell
today when compared to late last week and it proved harder work to cash up this
week on the back of it, reflecting lower average on the week.

A healthier show of calves today with 75 forward in the pens pre-sale
with a large proportion of the entries being continental with limousin and
british blue x calves seeing a considerable improvement in price compared to
the last few sales. Limousin x calves were topped by John Bowker at Earby for a
well feshed calf at £390 with Church Farm Enterprises topping all sections at
£425 with one of his fine british blue consignments. Robert Metcalfe of
Brearton would have as swift a trade as anyone with 4 of his calves between
£360 and £365 for 4- 5 week old calves.
A definite shortage of Natives in the pens today with the three on offer
which topped at £280 for another John Bowker consignment. Black and whites were
hard fought over by a number of buyers with the days average £73.19 not quite
representing how good the trade was with a lot of young calves selling well
into the 70’s through to past £100’s with Alan Throup of Higher House achieving
the top price with his black and white entry at £140 with Stephen Marshall,
West End also achieving this strong price for a genuine calves.
