Sheep numbers were good for the time of year, and given the weather conditions, greater than we had expected with 2,808 Old season Lambs presented for sale, but as anticipated, trade was significantly stronger on the week to record an overall average of 182p/kg, the most significant average being 189p for the 36kg to 45kg range. A quick look to EBLEX market prices is always the truthful way to compare market averages, decide for yourself where to sell your lambs.

At the top end of the scale today there was a long list of three figure prices, Paul Simpson £116 £107 £103 £100, Richard & Andrew Spink £110 & £103, George Stapleton £110, Kevin Marshall £109 & £100, Matt Thornber £109,  John Eddleston £108, £104 & £101.50, Samantha Asquith £108 & £100, Robert Fielden £105, Sid Walmsley £104 & £101, Chris Ryder £102, Henry Atkinson £103, Ellis Bros £102 & £100, Paul Baines £100. Whilst per kilo Paul Simnpson had 297.4p and 278.4p, Richard and Andrew Spink were next at 297.3p and 271.1p. Kevin Marshall had 286.8p, John Eddleston 273.3p and 270.0p, and Robert Fielden 262.5p and the list goes on.

Commercial lambs were good to sell as well, easily 15p up on the week, highlighted by Jim Caygill of Rylstone, whose run of 121 Texel Lambs from Cheviot/LLeyn Ewes averaging 196.5p/kg. Heavy lambs found a decent following with 46kg to 52kg averaging 174p and 52kg + lambs averaging 165p.

Hill bred lambs were dearer by around 10p to 12p per kilo, best of the Mules from Kevin Wilson of Blubberhouses who sold a pen of 20 at £83 and a further 20 at £81. Keith Slater of Goosnargh led the horned lamb trade with £82.50 for Scotch Blackie’s.
