3,609 SHEEP comprising  3,074 OLD SEASON LAMBS and  535 CAST SHEEP

It’s difficult to know where to start with today’s report. The headlines are an overall selling average of 221p/kg or £93.57 per head for 3,074 lambs sold. In that entry there were nearly 400 Beltex that averaged 285p and saw 29 pens or 174 lambs sell for over £3 per kilo, up to 336.8p for 38kg at £128 from Hayley Baines. Top two sale prices at £138 (45kg) and £137 (44kg) came from JGE Heseltine & Son of Bolton Abbey. There were also 1500 Texel Lambs that averaged 223p or £96.17 each, and between the nice heavies and smart goods 195 lambs sold for between £138 and £120, but it wasn’t all about the Lowland bred lambs, again over 1/3rd of the entry was hill bred with 680 Mule & Masham Wethers that averaged 206p topping at 215p from Steve Dorey and £106 a head from Nick Carlisle of Kilnsey. , 388 Horned Lambs saw best prime weight Wethers 190p to 215p, tops at £100 from RH Close, Starbotton and £98.50 Rob Tennant, Conistone.

A large show of Cast Sheep sold well, with all buyers keen and trade strong for the quality of the offering, several strong lots into the hundred and teens.

Rearing Calves to £500

B&W av £60.74 Cont av £374 Native av £216.31

Spring calf show and what a trade shame we just didn’t have more calves through the door. Pre Sale Champion went to a tremendous suckler bred limousin heifer from D&J Carlisle of Cracoe which sold for the top price of £500. The Reserve Champion a cracker of a bull from regular vendor Shaun Sowray of Sowray Bros, Bishop Thornton reached £440 with all his bulls averaging £433.  Limousin bulls saw a strong trade with both Hayton & Stocks and Sowray Bros breaking £400 at £460 and £420 respectively. However it’s the heifers which seem to be dearer than any other centres at the minute with British Blues on average £40-£60/ head above that of other centres with 11 British blue heifers averaging £338.

A small selection of black and whites sold away to expectations however the native calves again commanded a healthy trade with Aberdeen Angus bulls averaging £262 and mixed show of heifers averaging £180 . Calves continue to be in strong demand please do not hesitate to contact if you are interested. 01756 792375
