Cull Cow Prices

30 of 32 cast cows consigned from the parlour and with cattle out and a reasonable milk price numbers nationally remain tight. Meat was scarce but young dairies cattle soaring to 164.5p/kg for FA Holmes & Son of Castley and a non assured Charolais cow weighing 730kg making 155.5p/kg or £1135.

88 BREEDING SHEEP

A decent entry for the third week in June and a good trade throughout. Top price of the day £175 for a Texel cross with Twin Lambs at foot from David Williams, Cricin, North Wales followed at £170 for Charollais crosses with twin lambs from Frank Marrison of Buxton.
Sales of Ewes and Lambs continue every Monday at 12noon. Please advise the office of entries for next weeks sale.

2,199 Prime Sheep comprising 1814 Spring Lambs, 141 Old Season Lambs & Mature Hoggs, 244 Cast Ewes & Rams

A much larger show 1,814 New Season Lambs sold to a decent trade on the day with an overall selling average of 231.55p/kg or £92.08 per head, showing an average sale weight of 39.7kg as producers continue to take advantage of the trade and sell lambs at slightly weights.
Heavy lambs as a consequence are short of buyers requirements and these continue to be a good trade, the 46kg to 52kg weight range averaging £111.35 per head, and only 2 lambs weighing in above this selling at £130 from MJ Spensley of Elslack to Nick Dalby, Messrs Spensley sold another pen at £124. Thomas Boothman sold Texels to £125 and £123, John Nutter £124 twice and £122, Richard & Mark Ireland £122, Les Grange £122 and Jeremy Taylor £120.
It was Richard and Mark Ireland that had the top three per kilo prices of 284.6p 283.7p 281.6p, all three pens selling to Vivers Scotlamb, Gordon & Richard Crabtree from Clifton had a great run of lambs selling to 279.8p, Mick Hewitt of Giggleswick sold to high of 277.5p, Rob Marshall from Dacre had Texels to 276.2p, Gerald & Jonny Beresford sold Texels to 274.4p, and Les Grange of Follifoot Texel to 271.1p.

Old Season Lambs still come forward in sharp numbers and although not as dear as last week on paper, they were still well sold.

The trade for Cull Sheep was dearer on the week, with an overall average of £78.92, strong sheep especially good to sell.

45 Rearing Calves to £420

Calves continuing to sell away nicely with Paul and Janet Bolland of Dykelands on the receiving end of the best trade seeing their two blue bulls hit £420 and £410 respectively, RL Wright & Son also saw £410 for a bull with Fred Houseman of Church Farm Enterprises seeing his heifers realise the top price of £385. A smaller number of native calves forward today with some young bulls and from Michael Heron averaging £151, for all the natives on offer. Black and Whites selling away well again with just a few plain caves bringing the price back however, John Blackwell of Gargrave saw his bull calf reach £135 with well fleshed 4 week calves from John Marshall at £110 and £100.

Craven Dairy Auction (22 head)

 A cracking trade for the milkers forward today with the Reserve Champion from the Fort family of Glusburn taking the top price at £2050, giving 26 litres and just calved a week sold to Mark Goodall of Tong. Champion from Sally Wellock of Oakworth was giving 25 Litres and sold again to Mark Goodall of Tong for £1920.

 

A handy third prize heifer presented by Brian Moorhouse of Bell Busk giving 30 litres was snapped up by Richard Sutcliffe of Queensbury for £1850.

 

A run of Friesian incalf Heifers from WA Brown, Earby topped at £920 selling to the Smith Brothers of Sutton In Craven and Stephen and Eddie Jeanes of Glusburn brought 10 Maiden heifers topping at £600 4 times and mainly selling to David Smith of Riffa Farm, Otley.
