Prime Cattle (under 30 mos)

April Show and Easter Show of Prime Cattle. Champion was 535kg British Blue cross heifer bred from a Beef cross Brown Swiss suckler cow presented by Mesrs KA&HL Fawcett of Barden which made the top price of the day at 269.5p/kg (£1441) when selling to George Cropper Jnr buying on behalf of Sandersons Butchers of Baxenden.

Top gross was a 590kg Limousin cross heifer sold by RT&J Critchley&Son of Hutton to Countrystyle Butchers of Lancaster for £1484 or 251.5p/kg. Countrystyle Meats also bought the second highest priced animal (p/kg) again a Critchley heifer this time a British Blue cross which weighed 570kg and made 258.5p/kg or £1473.

Cull Cow Prices

Cast cattle trade becoming stronger by the week. B&W Dairies averaged £766 top of 121.5p/kg and a respectable margin between the heavies and the steaking cows. A pen of Tb Exempt Angus cows sold to 129.5p/kg for Mesrs G&MA Lawn  and a 640kg Montbelliarde Bull sold at 112.5p/kg or £934 for Mesrs SW&JE Ryder&Son of Harrogate. Buyers for all grades present and some coming up short of requirements.

3184 Prime Sheep (comprising 2914 Prime Hoggs & 270 Cast Ewes & Rams)

Similar numbers forward, and trade took a very nice lift on the week to level at 210p across the board or £95.31 per head, with an SQQ average of 222p. The smart sorts were scarce and these sold very strongly, 8 pens over £3 per kilo with Jeff Burrow, Hanlith leading the way at 343p (39kg £134) to Vivers Scotlamb. The same vendor had further pens at 329p (41kg £135) and 317p (41kg £131). Henry Atkinson had a great pen of 39kg at £130 or 333p, and others at 37kg £116.50 or 315p. James Towler from Grindleton was in amongst the high prices at 321p with 42kg at £135. The rest of the smart hoggs on the day 260p to 300p (35 pens), with handy weight export hoggs 225p to 255p.
Heavy Lambs followed suit and were dearer on the week, Smart butchers types up at £132 for 48kg form JE Burrow, and 46kg at £130 H Atkinson, William and Mick Oldfield, Gisburn sold 48kg at £128, Neil Tattersall, York sold 52kg at £125, Bill Logan Malham Moor sold 48kg at £123, other smarter 50kg to 55kg selling at £110 to £120, the good heavies £100 to £110, and commercials £95-£100.
Hill bred lambs were a keen trade, best Mules and Swales over £2 kilo, Cheviot bred lambs 210p,
Steve Dorey selling Mules to 212.5p (36 at 44kg £93.50) 209p (32 at 43kg £90) with Ben Simpson Hope Valley also selling Mules to 212.5p (14 at 44kg £93.50) with better end of heavier Mules into the mid 90’s RJ Ashworth West Marton selling 2 pens of 20 Mules 50kg £94, RG Church 49kg £93.50, Joey & Helen Drinkall Anglezarke 31 Mules 51kg £95, . Jimmy Baines had Swales to 204.9p (43kg £88), Phillip Stirke from Easingwold had Dalesbred to 208p twice (44kg £91.50) and 3 pens of 49kg Swales all at £92 each , A Phillipson Burnley sold Lonks to 207p (46kg £95.50) and Ben Simpson sold Scotch Black Faced to 216p (40kg £86.50).

Rearing Calves to £375 (43)

Handy show of calves this morning and despite a quiet ringside of buyers a good steady trade was seen for all on offer. Best bulls were maybe a touch easier on the week with Fred Houseman of Church Farm Enterprises topping at £375 with a respectable average of 323.64 for Blue bulls. A nice run of limousin’s from Pickersgills sold away to a top of £290.

 

Heifers were a good trade once again today with a couple of buyers making best calves a nice trade topping with a cracking heifer again from Church Farm Enterprises at £350.

 

Black and White bulls set a fair pace early on today with some cracking Friesian type calves from Lee’s of Lothersdale topping at £155, £140 with a fleshy Holstein bull from CN&SA Harrison Elslack at £130 with other handy calves in the £70 to £100 bracket.

Breeding Sheep – 129 Ewes with 196 Lambs

A nice show of sheep with Continental and Suffolk cross ewes with nice lambs at foot in high demand, twins £200 to £225, singles £140 to £175, twins at £225 RJ Umpleby, Killinghall also £225 and £220 DP Moore, Triangle, Sowerby Bridge. Mule sheep were a mixed selection, with a shortage of best types and Mule outfits definitely benefit from lambs being just a shade older. Top Mule sheep £200 for Shearling Twins from David White Hebden.
