Prime Cattle

The September Primestock Show saw James Robertshaw of Keelham Farm Shop both Champion and Reserve as the countdown commences for their Skipton Opening early in 2015. The Champion was a 490kg British Blue Heifer from Jim Baines of Trawden which topped the market in p/kg at 266.5p. Reserve Champion was the first prize steer from Simon Bennett of Sisden Moor a 590kg British Blue which sold for 240.5p/kg or £1419. Top gross on the day was the £1468 paid by Dick Binns for his Saltaire shop for a 555kg Limousin cross heifer which made 264.5p/kg and was sold by Bernard Simpson of Heathfield.

Seasonal uplift in cull cattle numbers both here and nationwide with cattle carrying finish improving in trade and the average distorted by the large percentage of lean lightweight dairies which met a good trade with both processor and feeding buyer interest particularly for young cattle.

5,138 Prime Sheep

A very large show of sheep generally proved harder to cash than last week as supply increased everywhere causing Lowland lambs to be £2 to £4 cheaper on the week, although conversely, the hill bred sheep were dearer on the week. Trade very much in line with the countrywide average today, and although trade was down, there were still 15 individual buyers at the ringside to bid for stock. A very large show of cast sheep were easily sold and trade was seen to be as strong as recent weeks.

The Monthly Show was very kindly judged by Mr Jim Holden from Woodhead Bros, Colne and he awarded the prizes listed below. The Championship and Reserve Championship honours were reversed this month, with Scott Robinson stepping up to Champion, whilst Trevor and Clive Robinson took the reserve. Both pens were purchased by Mr James Robertshaw buying on behalf of the family business Keelham Farmshop

Rearing Calves to £485 (58)

B&W av £68.29 Cont av £352.82 Native av £215

A smaller show of calves today, though by no means a bad run of calves with some strong prices throughout. Black and Whites marched into an average of £68.29 and with continentals (certainly not the best run of calves this year) but still made a strong average of £352.82. A Lack of natives but the ones who did bring them were rewarded highly with an average of £215.

It is worth noting 95% of calves shown are 1 ½ month old or less.
