An
increased entry of sheep met with a stronger trade to average 8p/kg up on the
week at 182.2p/kg overall, with an SQQ of 184p/kg.
Smart
lambs were, as predicted, good to sell. The best of these came from Stephen
Pepper whose pen of 3 Beltex crosses weighing 40kg made £123 each purchased on
behalf of Hartshead Meat Company. The very best end made 250p plus, nice Beltex
types trading away around 220p. In the lump, Stephen Pepper also made £106
& £101, Ellis Bros £112 & £108, John Mellin £109 & £102 with Kevin
Marshall weighing in at £100.
Commercial
export lambs were a good trade. Continental and Suffolk crosses weighing 37kg
to 39kg making 190p to 205p, whilst the 40kg to 43kg were making 180p to 195p.
The average for Texels 36kg to 45kg was 189p/kg. Compare this to the 46kg to
52kg lambs where the average dropped to 174p/kg, and producers should decide
whether it is economic to add extra weight to sheep if it pushes them overfat. Hill
Bred lambs were a similar trade as last week, but not just as much weight about
with the Mule lambs, mainly 38kg to 43kg. Averaging 165p/kg.
Cast
sheep were forward in less numbers with trade seen to be slightly sharper on
the week topping £126.50 averaging £58.63.

The smallest entry for a long time but one of the most electric
atmospheres, all calves were a pleasure to sell with black and whites were on
fire with buyers in abundance looking for good well fed calves that they have
struggled to source elsewhere.
Mark Houseman of Church Farm Enterprises topped black and white calves
with 1 ½ month Holstein Bull for £140 but was closely run by David Booth, Broom
House, Earby who had another Holstein at £135 with 15 of the 21 Black and
Whites realising over £100 Despite only 14 Blues being forward 6+ buyers were
all competing hard for those top quality continentals. A good trade for Natives also considering the
size and age, all sold to a good price. Dairy Sale Next week with calves
wanted.
