Prime Cattle (under 30 mos)
A decent show of Clean Cattle presented to a competitive ringside of buyers representing retail butchers, farmshops and wholesalers. Trade today saw 2 animals topside of 250p, peaking at 258.5p for a handyweight Limousin heifer presented by David Bailey of Long Lee and purchased by George Cropper for Sandersons Butchers of Baxenden. Following close on the heels at 257.5p for another Limousin heifer was RT&J Critchley & Sons from Preston again purchased by Sandersons Butchers.
Barkers Yorkshire Butchers from Skipton purchased top price per head from CD&RF Kitching when their Limousin Bullock grossed £1389. Messrs Kitching also had 2nd highest gross at with a Blue Heifer making £1375 purchased by Robertshaws Farmshop in Thornton, one of 5 cattle they bought on the day. 3rd in line at £1364 was F&B Smith of Westhouse with a Limousin Steer making up one of four purchases by Keelham Farmshop from Skipton.

Cull Cow Prices
A great trade for cull cows today, leading gross for Black & White cows was a massive £1128 from MP Jennings in Cowling, other black & Whites grossing £1032 from JD Taylor & Son, Broughton and £969 from JK Blackburn & Son in Storriths which was top price per kilo at 139.5p, followed by RM Spence of Cowling at 138.5p. All Black & Whites averaged 120.8p.
Leading gross price Beef cow was £1236 from SN&V Jowett in Queensbury, Limousin crosses levelling at £1142 or 160.4p.
Overall average today of 125.6p/kg or £848.91.

3148 Prime Lambs presented and sold with a very strong average of 219.7p comparing very well on the day. Leading kilo price went to R&H Critchley of Preston, Lancs with 6 Beltex crosses at 298p to Hartshead Meat Co in Mossley. Hartshead also took the 2nd highest pen at 285p form D&L Coar in Darwen, Lancs, and 284p from M&B Allen in Staithes, North Yorks Moors. Robertshaws Farmshop in Thornton secured lambs at 284p from A Jenkinson, Langbar, Ilkley whilst 284p was paid to JM Hall in Airton, Skipton by Brayton Farmshop in Selby. Messrs Hill & Wright made the journey up from Doncaster with a large run of 120 lambs with the best pen making 275p purchased by Vivers Scotlamb in Annan.
Per head there were some fantastic prices, £142 was the lead price paid to JM Hall by Brayton Farmshop. The same purchasers also getting lambs at £128 each from Grain Farms Ltd in Wadsworth, Hebden Bridge.
Four pens of lambs made £127.50 per head, they were from Annabelle Sugden of Laycock, Keighley selling to Robertshaws Farmshop in Thornton, M Crabtree of Kettlesing, Harrogate to Brayton Farmshop, J&R Paisley of Middleton, Ilkley to Brayton Farmshop, and P Crabtree & Son of Clifton, Otley to Keelhamshop in Skipton.
RKR Wood of Stokesley on the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors made a weekly trip over to Skipton and was rewarded with £127 when selling to Kendalls Farm Butchers in Harrogate and Pateley Bridge. 12 other pens broke the £120 barrier.
As usual medium and heavy weights carrying plenty of flesh found a very ready market, with 46kg to 52kg averaging 223p.
Handyweight lambs were generally 215p to 225p, smarter end 235p to 260p, commercial types around 205/210p.
Hill lambs selling well, Mule wethers from 200p to 205p, better end 210p.
The 1,047 Cast Sheep & Hoggs sold to a strong trade this week with heavy ewes looking dearer on the week and plain ewes taking a slight drop in price! Nearly a third of the entry consisted of Horned and Hill Sheep with top price of £66.50 for a pen of Swaledales and some South Country Cheviots at £67.50. Heavy ewes well sort for with anything with flesh and weight getting away very well! Beltex to £132.50 from John Midgley, Luddendenfoot, Texels sold to £123.50 JM Wilson & Sons, Beckwithshaw followed behind by JM Hall £122.50! Any heavy ewes with style and weight once again £115+ with ewes with less style £100+. White faced ewes came to a very respectable avg of £81 considering the larger runs of plain old ewes that got sold to both feeding and slaughter outlets!
322 Mules sold to £86.50 meat ewes £73+ with lean meat not far behind in the mid 60’s and plain ewes anywhere from the 40’s upwards with the odd ones making less!

Calves on fire! Looking dearer on the week. A nice entry of 40 calves forward with trade leading at £465 from RE Ayrton for a blue bull followed closely behind by another regular vendors PJ&JE Bolland selling their top price bull of £445 for a Blue! The same vendor also sold his Lim Bull for a top price of the breed of £400 for a 4 week old calf! Char Bulls sold very well to a top of £440 for a 4 week old calf from KT Wood & Son!
