Prime Cattle (under 30 mos)

A small but high quality entry of retail cattle gave plenty of choice to customers with Countrystyle Butchers heading up the prices with their 279.5p/kg purchase from Fiona Jowett showing a 545kg Limousin cross heifer for father Stephen Jowett of Thornton which also grossed up the highest gross of £1523. Tom Critchley showing cattle under AA&EE Critchley & Son of Hutton presented a very good pen of Limousin cross heifers best of which weighed 520kg and made 267.5p/kg (£1391) when also sold to Countrystyle Butchers of Lancaster. Leading buyer with 8 purchases was the prolific Keelham Farm Shop which included the highest priced steer a 600 kg Limousin cross consigned by regular vendor Malcolm Metcalfe of Baldersby near Thirsk which made 248.5p/kg or £1491.

Cull Cow Prices

Cast cows were very good to sell with an entry of extremes either good or very plain. A better sample of dairies at the top end with heavy, dry cows with finish comfortably 127-133p. Plain worn cows still a strong trade with even a handful in this category amongst the beef crosses which distorts the overall average and belies a very strong demand.

4,809 PRIME AND CAST SHEEP

Sheep were forward in much increased numbers with 4,025 lambs and 784 Ewes & Rams penned for sale. With lambs in much higher supply countrywide the overall average was down on the week. Good Lambs and well fleshed types, especially if heavier, found the best following and were not too far different to last weeks prices, but more lambs in the entry either lacking finish or weight and these were the ones to see the higher fall in value on the week.  Having said this, good Mule Wether lambs were a cracking trade on the day and looked well sold against a commercial lowland lamb. With gathering on the fells also taking place, there were several consignments of lightweight Horned lambs making up most of the entries in the 32kg to 35kg bracket and these sold away nicely.
The best end of lambs topped at £114 twice, the first pen coming from Jeremy Taylor and the second from Richard & Mark Ireland, both lots purchased by Countrystyle Meats. Don Leeming from Pateley Bridge sold Texels to £112, Edward Fort from Silsden Moor £110, Ellis Bros from Addingham Moorside £105 twice, Richard Towell of Glusburn £104 and Jim Snowden from Rylstone £102. Jim Scriven of Elslack topped per kilo at 243.9p purchased by Vivers Scotlamb, Don Leeming 243.5p, and Jeremy Taylor 242.6p.
Best of the Mule Wethers in the mid 80’s this week tops at £85.50 from Bernard Simpson of Pateley Bridge, and Mark Ewbank of Middlesmoor topped the Swales at £70.
Cast Sheep were forward in large numbers and heavy sheep were good to sell, with best Mules up around £80.

Another healthy number of calves through the door today with the top price calf belonging to Hayton and Stocks of Bolton Abbey. Fred Houseman saw a flying trade with blue heifers at £450 and £440 with Hayton & Stocks seeing their strong limousin heifers reach £415 and £400. Native bulls were a premium today with the calves on offer flying away with young calves nudging the £300 mark all the time.

Black and whites touch easier on the week, again a mixed show of quality hampering the average but overall a straight trade for the better end topping at £105 for a nice calf from Robert Throup of Bradley.
