Prime Cattle (under 30 mos)

With access to sales curtailed by holidays falling towards the end of the week buyers were keen to secure supplies for 2 weeks with Robertshaws Farm Shop at Thornton very keen to put beef away for the New Year. Owner and buyer James Robertshaw secured both highest priced steer and heifer by weight with the highest price in the market 278.5p/kg (£1546) paid for a 555kg Limousin cross heifer from RT&J Critchley&Sons of Hutton and 275.5p/kg (£1501) for a 545kg Limousin cross steer from Simon Bennett of Silsden Moor. Ralph Pearson Wholesdale Butchers from Bradford were once again amongst the highest gross prices with the overall top a 625kg British Blue cross steer from CD&RF Kitching of Threshfield, leading the way, a beast which grossed £1678. With less local slaughtering capacity open next week there will be no sale for prime cattle or cows on Monday 28th December.

2,105 Prime Sheep comprising 1563 Prime Lambs, & 542 Cast Ewes & Rams

A different sort of day today with European export restrictions threatening to dampen trade for certain classes of lambs, as a direct result this making us 4 buyers down on the week, but by giving out sound advice to customers pre-sale we managed the situation fairly well and had a reasonable trade throughout for the total entry, with retail lambs for butchers shops and supermarket orders looking a straight trade, heavies selling to a similar trade on the week, and ethnic trade being quite sparky pre Christmas.

Some premium prices today for quality lambs, with Colin Doney of Dacre leading the sale at £138 per head for Continentals and they are no heading to Robertshaws Farmshop at Thornton Bradford.
A trio of vendors at £124 per head, first Frank Throup, Silsden Moor with Continentals selling to Kendalls Farm Butchers in Pateley Bridge and Harrogate, and then from JR Crabtree, Otley and these selling to Robertshaws Farmshop. Finally at £124 was J&M Blakey, Bolton by Bowland who’s pen of 7 Continentals (48kg 258p) sold to Paul Watson of Hellifield, with the same combination responsible for 48kg Continentals at 256p or £123 per head.
Paul Simpson from Bolton by Bowland topped his run at £123 per head (46kg 267p) these going to Robertshaws Farmshop, who also purchased lambs from JR Crabtree Otley at £122 and from JE Burrow at £120 per head (45kg 266p).

Per kilo it was Kevin Marshall of Darley that took top spot at 319p (36kg £115) and 300p (39kg £117).
JE Burrow made 281.1p (37kg £104) and Hayley Baines made 280.5p (41kg £115) who also made 267.5p. A&K Kiernan from St Michaels pitched in with a usual consignment of well fed types and the best of these made 272.1p.

Handyweight lambs found a decent enquiry with ethnic trade picking up a good portion of these, prices generally around 215p for commercial types, 225p for decent sorts, and 240 plus for smartest end.
Heavies would be a similar trade on the week, whilst Mules and hill lambs although a shade less on the week returned nicely with tops at 203p from M Ryder & Son Harrogate and a solid breed average of 192p.

All should be back to normal next week, and as ever, we will endeavour as usual to keep you informed with relevant information.

Ewes met to a serious trade with 542 sold. 298 white faced ewes sold to average £100 straight through with Thomas Boothman selling some belting ewes at £147.50 and £139.50 followed by AL Thompson selling a single ewe at £138.50. Big well-bred heavies selling in the £125-£130. Heavy crossbreds £115-£125. Medium ewes sold very well with flesh selling £95-£100. Lean ewes £78-£90. Suffolks £115-£127.50 for best with mediums £100+ with the breed average being £113. Swales sold to £85.50 from T Boothman followed by £73.50 from the same vendor. Ellis Bros, Ilkley then sold swales to £62.50. Leaner ewes in the £50’s with not much plain about. Small ewes with less meat £31.50+. Lonks sold £74.50,£60.50. Small hill cheviots well fleshed £65.50-£61.50. BFL sold to £116.50 from CD&RF Kitching, Skipton. Mules sold similar best end £90-£99.50. Mediums £78-£80 lean smaller ewes in the £60’s. Goats sold at £69.50-£82.50. More required next week and the following with orders strong at the minute and many active buyers ringside.
