Lamb numbers up again today, and trade remained, for us, very similar. During the last couple of weeks the lamb trade has fluctuated greatly from 165p to 195p, but Mondays seem to have always been in the middle, neither being top of the tree nor down in the rut. If this sort of level can be maintained for a few weeks now then that should give a nice lead into the autumn period, assuming the £-Euro exchange rate doesn’t go drastically stronger than 1.26.
Some good runs of lambs today around 210p-220p and around £100 for some smart heavy ones. Plenty of lambs 180p to 190p, and heavier end 170p to 190p depending upon their quality. There are a few more Mule lambs and horned lambs making it into the market now and seeing reasonable returns.

There was a big entry of ewes today, and the heavier end of Continental and Suffolk cross ewes sold very well. The Leaner Mule and Horned ewes that were dear last week were not just in as strong demand today and trade for these would be slightly less on the week.

Good show today with 58 calves forward. Overall quality was good with only a few young small calves penalised on price. Throughout prices were a straight trade with some stiff bidding for a run of honest blue calves from Broadley Farms topping at £390 for a British Blue coming up 2 months old, but heifers took the top call with Hartley’s, Bolton Abbey reaching £410 for a fantastic British Blue heifer.
Over half of the calves presented were black and white with the average coming well in line with other centres, it would of looked stronger if not for a few bobby calves drawing the average down but anything well fleshed and bright were motoring to £60 easily enough with the very best from Hartley’s just sneaking past £100.
